this brings up a question. What is considered correct to either call them sailboat or yacht? Is there a difference?

Hello. There is the Eventide Owners association website. Full size yachts.
On that you can find a model of my Goosander just 27 inches loa. I also posted a picture of Ray's E24 yacht that he kindly sent me before the publication of the article in Model Boats magazine.

I think the Eventide could be a very successful model. The full size ones sailed very well and were excellent small cruisers. A friend built one, many years ago and had quite a few years happy cruising up the East Coast and near continent.

Not being completely familiar with finding my way around the forum yet and having just found a bunch of notification email responses to my post in my spam folder I want to apologize to those members I have not thanked for their advice.

Ah! Chris you never mentioned the whole agenda here! We all thought this was an innocent race of model yachts, now the ugly truth is coming out.

I say no more, but losing, I have found is not always a bad thing.

Roy you are being silly now, no doubt your next idea will be a spinnaker gybe around the mark and that is where we all get very wet, no thanks 😂😂
I console myself with being a gentleman and letting the lady win but would not let her hear me say that.

Hi Chris it looks like you come in a very creditable second!

What sorts the men out from the boys is actually a trip around the buoys. Layout a triangular course and go upwind on the first leg.

Hello Martin. You ask the question old school or modern?

Definitely old school. I like a bit of character. It's the old saying "They don't make them like they used to" 😁

Hi Colin H, The Eventide may be a bit too much to start with but by the same author is Wild Duck a litttle smaller featured a year or so back in Model Boats magazine. But the main thing is there is an excellent laser cut wood pack with most of what you need already done. Also on the Sarik web site there is a video of the build start to finish.

Hi Chris G, was it this one? I converted this Bella into gaff rig and called her Pelican.

She sails very well and am looking for a Bella to have a race with!

Aeronaut Bella is great fun to build and sails beautifully, two people with similar yachts can have great fun racing if that is your bag, I can vouch for that but get depressed when left following as is often the case and at 77 do not consider myself too old.
I once, and cannot remember where saw a Bella converted to gaff rig with bowsprit which was a real delight to behold and sailed really well.

Firefighter, you could build from plan, such as the latest free plan in model boats magazine.
Also I may have a plan for a motor sailer, so it can be sailed anytime with or without sails.
I will have a look in my workshop tomorrow.
Cheers Colin.

Hi Firefighter,
So you want a kit that you could take your time with making that is also a bit challenging to build.

There has been some good suggestions from the other members but after seeing your work I think you would like something like this.

It is a bit pricy but is this the sort of boat you want to build or would you rather a more modern type ?

It will help us if we know what type, old school or modern.

I would like to say thank you to all the members that have replied with their recommendations to my post.

However, I think I may have confused members by not making myself clear in the original post. For that I apologize.

Having given it some more thought what I should have said was that I wanted recommendations on yacht kits that were leisure craft rather than RC yachts for racing in competition. All I want to do (come warmer weather) is take the yacht to the pond and learn how to sail it leisurely around the water rather than at racing speed. At 74 my reactions would not be fast enough to stop it converting itself to a submarine and submerging😁 An important part to me is that the model should be an interesting build and challenging to some degree. And the finished model has a smart and interesting appearance.

So if I could start again and ask for recommendations of yachts based on the above I would be very grateful.

My apologies for any earlier confusion.
Best regards,
Greg

The Wee Nip was my first rc sailboat. We had a good group racing them regularly with all manner of construction materials. A great social boat. Now have 3 and all have different characteristics .

DF sailboats are pretty much out of the box, a few nuts n bolts, complete some rigging, add batteries and go sailing. In Canada Leadingedgehobbies.com is your go to place. But if you like to build and sail what you’ve built, then get a kit or build an Emma.

Hi Firefighter Im with Roger A1 on this subject have look around on E bay or suchlike and pick up a second hand yacht. The dragon force or the Victoria are great boats to learn on.
Then if you find that sailing has gotten under your skin building your dream craft will be all the more satisfying.
Stay safe chaps, Jim.

Agree with Ron, go for an Emma. Lots of info and help available online.

Also look at the RCgroups forum for lots builders experiences.

If you want to learn to sail I would recommend a joysway DragonForce 65, you only have to rig it and fit a receiver. It has all the adjustments you need to make it sail really well. Most clubs will have members who sail them already and can help you set it up. Learn to sail then build your own yacht and incorporate the features you want.

I would recommend not building a Footy as your introduction to sailing. They look COOL, but they are very finicky. I got so frustrated with mine that it was sold off within a couple months.

If this is your first build, and I believe you told me your shop has good woodworking equipment, I'd highly recommend building Gary Wade's "Emma".

http://www.bearospaceindustries.com/boats2.html

Plus there are YouTube instructional videos done by Gary readily available. If you need 1 on 1 help you can email Gary too.

Others on this website have experience building Gary's designs, ask them. Right Peter?

My opinion

Hi Greg,

I do not know much about sail boats but I have heard that the 'Footy' is very good for beginners.
Here is a link for you to look at.
I think there is also a section were there are a few there you can click on and it show how to build them the main one you have the instructions for is the WINC.

Thank you Colin for the suggestion of the Thames barge. A nice idea and contacting Nerys.

Thank you Dave for the suggestion about contacting a local club. It was a little unfortunate. I contacted the local club by email a few days ago sending my message to the person who's email address was shown on their site asking a different question. I received a reply saying they could not help me as the person I had emailed had passed away on new years day. I felt it was respectful not to ask any further questions.

If there is a local model boat club near to your location it might be useful to pop along to one of their meetings and see what models they sail and pick up some ideas. Some sailing yachts require relatively deep keels so you really need to identify where you can sail and choose a model you like and which is suitable for the location. There are many kits available to suit all needs so if you know the sailing parameters and ask again I'm sure our members will offer many suitable solutions.

Maybe you should ask Nerys, she's the queen of sailing knowledge. Maybe you could start with a Thames sailing barge kit.
Cheers Colin.

Building My First Sail Boat or Yacht

As a beginner to RC boats I have an incredible lot to learn so I'm keen to start building another boat in addition to what I building now. As some of you will already know I am building as my first boat Aeronaut's Cabin Cruiser Diva. Which I am writing a build blog on as I progress. The next kit I would like to get is a sailing boat or yacht for the novice RC builder. I have building experience having built static display model ships so a challenge is not a problem. If anyone could recommend kits that would suit my needs I would be grateful.
