Thanks EdW. I remember now. I didn't answer it. I was going to get back to it but got side tracked by the work being done on the house..☹️

For SimpleSailor

In the context of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, which of the following is the minimum requirement for the composition of a vessel's Safety Management System (SMS) with respect to crew competence?

Question of the Day?

Looks like I am going to need to take screen shots again. I am sure I answered yesterday's question and got it right. But the question master says I didn't answer it. A lot going with moving house and now the builders are in. Maybe I missed it but I don't think so. If some kind person could tell me what the question was, that would be nice..

Question of the Day?

Hi EdW, I'm in favor of canceling the question and resubmitting a new one if possible.
Alternatively, I'd give all the green boxes, even those who received red boxes.
Further investigation is possible (perhaps including photos of written sources with bibliography), but in the meantime, the question should be contested if there are serious doubts.
In any case, the point of my comment wasn't your knowledge, which I don't question.

Question of the Day?

Alessandro how I know a bit about hull fouling is that I did research on its prevention for yachts that I crewed on. Due to my electronic engineering background, I assisted with the fitting of ultrasonic prevention systems on a few boats.

Well done EdW.
I'm impressed by the participants' knowledge across all fields, especially those who claim to only look at the internet after answering.
It's remarkable that their prior knowledge recently coincides perfectly with AI.

Question of the Day?

I wonder how many of our models will be in the water long enough for any fouling to occur? Normally it is just the sludge layer on the water surface that I have to clean off.

Wow Ed! All before breakfast! I have a feeling we have had that question before, or one very similar I picked Diatom because that was last time's answer, which I got right. So come on AI, get your artificial head out of your artificial fundament and give us some decent questions!

Question of the Day?

Todays answer is wrong, the first layer is due to diatom plankton, the second phase is bacterial plankton so the answer should be C as this enables D. AI bases its deductions on facts that are available and in this case it was not given all the facts.

Facts
Microfouling organisms are usually the first fouling agents to attack a submerged surface. Microorganisms are further grouped into two subsets:

Bacteria and diatoms: These are microscopic organisms that colonize a virgin surface and build a biofilm on it. Fouling diatoms are either pen-shaped or cylindrical, hence the names pennate diatoms and centric diatoms.
Algae: They typically attach to the biofilm and exist in three forms: green algae (Chlorophyta), red algae (Rhodophyta), and brown algae (Phaeophyta).

😂 I picked the one that I have heard about (C). But I was going to pick the answer that gave the longest explanation (D), which has usually been the correct answer 😩😕🤐.

Waited 30 days to get rid of the red line and now it's appeared back at the front *#=^*!! (That's me swearing in hieroglyphics).🤣😂..

Question of the Day?

Out of curiosity, I translated "belaying pins" correctly because I didn't use a translator but the Amati modeling company website, which has several languages for each product.
Actually, in Italian, they're called "caviglie" (ankles), meaning ankles? That is, the part of the body above the heel.

Question of the Day?

When I searched for the translation of "fife rail" and saw the photo, I understood what it was.
This question was 100% correct; I don't know if it was because it's such an easy question or because people found help online.
I studied the best way to make the "fife rail" and opted for the square C shape. Or, to be more precise, a square with one side missing, obviously seen from above.
I had to figure out and predict how many rigging would need to be attached and plan for the same number of holes for the belaying pins.
I also had to find the right size for the belaying pins based on the scale, something I had no idea about before. Even the distance between the holes can't be taken for granted.
Here are some photos.

If you explore for documentaries then try Deep History, I have only ever found 2 episodes. There must be more, it goes way back in time to explain why things are the way they are now.

Ok Nick about the OU coarse. I just remembered seeing the vents bubbling away with creatures swimming around, on one of the TV programmes narrated by David Attenborough, and from years ago by the Jacques Cousteau documentaries on-board the Calypso . Fantastic educational films.😀..

Question of the Day?

Hello everyone.
Let's start by saying that I've gotten it wrong in the past. Today I guessed right, but I think the question is poorly phrased.

I don't like the way the question was worded, and I had trouble understanding it even the first time.
I may have simply had problems interpreting the translation, and only the answer options help a little.
In my opinion, it's always important to specify who is upwind (or downwind) versus who. In short, it's a relative, not an absolute, position.

I've made this simple argument:
Whoever is upwind (in sailing, obviously, not in motor sailing) always has a tactical advantage over whoever is maneuvering downwind.
So much so that it's a universal rule to give precedence to whoever is downwind when sailing on a collision course on identical tacks.
In a battle, maneuverability is often the most determining factor.
In theory, I also agree with Luckyduck's reasoning and consideration. This option, however, isn't considered among the four possible ones.
I don't think A, B, and C are correct, they are all highly incorrect in my opinion, including B.

Question of the Day?

Hi, luckyduck, I got this wrong as well but I think the clue is "in line of battle" ie they are in-line.

If the ship is circling the opponent then you are right, the guns have greater range due to the tilt of the ship.

Luckyduck, Yes you are correct but that is not offered as a choice in this case, B and D are both correct as well but D is the better choice.

Question of the Day?

Sorry, todays answer is wrong - it allows a ship to fire more of its guns, not from wind assistance, but because its gun ports are clear of the water - windward ship has the lower guns facing the leeward ship unable to open their lower gun ports.

How I remember this, K comes before Y, therefore K)etch mizzen mast before rudder post and Y)awl after rudder post.

Question of the Day?

Phil, your memory serves you well. You remember very well.
We also talked about the difference between a yawl and a ketch.
The ketch has the rudder aft of the mizzen mast (so the mizzen mast is forward of the rudder).
The yawl has the opposite.

Yes Phil, the Dory one--I wasn't sure exactly what a Dory was the last time we had this question and I was told by Roy ? to watch the Captains courageous film. I bought this on DVD and still haven't had the chance to watch it yet 😊, maybe this time!!

The latest question is also a repeat 👍. Or as Alessandro says--a review lesson !!

If you want to see a film about old time sailing and one of the best ever, then seek out Captains Courageous, with Spencer Tracey.

The fishing from dories and the sailing of the Gloucester schooners is incredible and historically a documentary.
