Dutch sailing barge

An example of the type of posts you can find on the AMBO Facebook group. These maybe barges of the UK but several European countries have barges. So hopefully you’ll get a chance to visit the site, establish a few contacts and see what you are interested in building.

Andy

This was built from a Billings kit 26 years ago by me for a friend. Is it a style of Dutch canal boat you would be looking at to build?

The plans do look interesting, they are the first I’ve come across. The other conversation we had at the club was … how to steam the planks for the bow. The curve is quite extreme.

I’d not thought of Facebook but unfortunately I’m not a user. However, my better half is, so that might be worth a look as well.
Thanks
Much appreciated

Go to the group on Facebook for the AMBO Association of Model Barge Owners. They no longer have a website, but you should find a wealth of knowledge from this group.

Thanks

I’d not seen that, interesting to look at instructions. Might be a touch small etc to make it into sailing model.

I’m sure any sailing model will need a false detachable keel, to get it to perform on the water.

We did have a discussion today at the club about how the Lee boards could be made to move up and down.

Billing boats have a small kit version which you may be able to scale up into something you could use. I'm not sure how effective leeboards would be at smaller scales so I would think a false keel would be essential - but I may be wrong on that.
It sounds a challenging build but that is no reason not to try 😊

Dutch sailing barge

Anyone know of or had any experience of making a sailing model of a Dutch barge? Spent three weeks cycling in the Netherlands last year but have failed to find suitable drawings or kits.
Thanks
