As I have been working with machines all of my working life, I thought it was worth investing in something I was familiar with and as I know how annoying a weak machine can be, so I put my money into something with backbone. There is still compromises to be made but I am really happy with these so far. I made these two mounting brackets yesterday afternoon for the Submarine WTC. For me, a Digital Readout, (DRO) was a must for accuracy and speed.

Agreed Rick. My 'Machine shop' is in the corner of my workshop/kitchen😉
Dunno what scale Ian and Peter (Mouldbuilder) are building to but I build to anywhere between 720 to 35.
Consequently my 'machine shop' is also 'scale size' 😁
Nothing I can't lift with one hand!
(Except perhaps the scroll saw in the cellar.)
800kg!? Phew!!

Finally managed to get the machines working. I am really impressed with the Warco machines. The Milling Machine was a lot heavier than I thought. I bought some feet for it to help with the leveling. They were not totally successful as the machine was not really heavy enough to work properly and actually introduced a spongy wobble. I decided to make some metal spacers from Stainless. They work very well and the machine is really stable now.
I am really pleased with the results and will do well as a temporary workshop until I up sticks and move to Hungary.
I am now looking forward to carrying on with my Submarine WTC and the Dusseldorf.😊

This is a Colchester Student Mark 1.5. (Mark 1 with Mark 2 Carriage) I battled to get it into the workshop was great fun but still preferred my Myford! Was built in the days of good British Engineering. Just give an example The Colchester weighs in at 800Kg a replacement hinese Lathe tips the scales at about 250Kgs. Colchesters were never bolted down due to their weight! Never had a problem with twist👍👍

Some years ago a friend of mine was offered a lathe on condition that he was responsible for transport. That machine turned out to be a Colchester Student, duly installed in his garage it served him well for many years. On retirement and moving to Devon from Hertfordshire a new owner had to be found the same arrangement was utilised although my friend misses the machine he now has a garage he can park his car in.😊

The Milling Machine has arrived. I am delighted with it but it weighs 220Kg so I will need a crane to get it into place on its stand. Bolting to the floor is a must I think. Probably be a couple of weeks before I can put it through its paces.😀
This will raise some nuts, bolts and washers.

Nice one though Peter and useful for storage - the mill is a very good idea - I have the very first type Unimat - no auto feed & the bed is simply two rods - you have to disassemble it and fit an upright post to convert it to a milling machine - came with a jigsaw attachment however. I was given it so cant really complain - but the mill part is unused as its such a hassle to set up - Lathe is rubber belt driven too which are hard to find these days - been thinking of converting it to foot pedal (sewing machine type) variable speed operation.

If you are into building steam engines the mill is a must - have an uncompleted twin which has been put away as drilling and filing by hand is not only tedious and hard work but its very easy to slip and cause damage - mill would have done the work in no time..........

Hi Red.
I had to buy the cabinet as an extra. I also bought the two axis DRO to go with it. As soon as I get the fixing bolts from work I will give it a try. The safety devices are good but I must admit that I am going to find the safety switch on the chuck guard extremely annoying. I might be forced to bypass. 😐
I think you can buy the milling attachment as an extra also.
The machine does look very well built. I have looked at several independent reviews and they were all good.
I plan to buy a mill from the same source soon.

That's a very nice looking machine indeed Peter- notice it has all safety shields etc fitted too. Did it come come complete with the cabinet ? And does it have a milling facility like the Emco ?

Martin are you being hopeful again - or are they solid gold bolts ?

My small lathe has arrived. I have placed the machine on top of the cabinet only to find an unusual problem. They supplied M10 bolts to fix the bed onto the cabinet. The two fixed extended nuts in the cabinet are threaded M10. The fixing holes in the machine are suited for M8 bolts.??? I think I will use M8 bolts with nuts and lock washers instead.😊

Took my workshop/machine shop one step forward today.
I have ordered a Warco WM180 bench lathe with DRO today. I will purchase the mill, probably the same make, later in the year. I have seen a lot of reviews on this machine and it looks to be reasonable. The only main criticism has been to do with the tool post. I will change it to a quick change immediately.
I will post a picture when it arrives, probably in a few days.
I have also now purchased all of the models I wanted prior to retirement. I have the following ready to go.
1) Trumpeter 1:200 Hood with 4 screw rc upgrade, (Deans Marine), and additional detailing set.
2) VMW 46" Crash Tender.
3) Aero Naut "Diva".
4) Model Slipways 1:16 Tamar Class Lifeboat.
These should keep me out of trouble for a while.
Still to complete before I retire.
1) Dusseldorf Fire Boat. 50%
2) Gato Submarine. 50%
3) PTB upgrade. 20%
4) Krick Police Launch. 96.235629% approx.

Not too long to go now.😊

If you have a local joiner near you he could probably knock up crates to your specifications,
When I worked at the art college crates for art work were made from either 10 mm or 12 mm ply depending on the size of the art work ,these had 40mm x20mm framing for strengthening ,hope this is of some help.

I would be very interested, even bordering on extremely interested in buying your lathe, it is worth a lot more than £100, would it be possible to see a few photos in a private message? Regards, Gary.
