I am pleased to be able to say that I have at last made a start on the LST. Not a lot, I've just had a good go at the deck supports. Bit more and I'll be asking Alice to help me with the motor and rudder installation. Not worth a photo yet, you wouldn't be able to see what I've done.

Thanks Doug, I had a vague idea that a couple of soft cheeses were still packed like that, but eating very little cheese, I hadn't noticed, but in the interest of nautical research, I'll investigate next time I'm in the supermarket and see if I think I could build a boat from one of these packages. I might even buy one in order to give the subject longer perusal time.

You are cleverer than me Mark, I'm doing this plastic LST because that's what the kit is, but for choice, I'd sooner it was wood. I'm at home with wood.

I remember some soft cheese being packed in small containers made of very thin wood and until relatively recently Ikea produced sets of round very thin wooden boxes, if I remember correctly they were in sets of ten going from about three inches diameter to about ten inches, they nested inside each other like Russian Matrioshka dolls. When I was in the craft business we used to buy them in, paint and decorate them and fill them with fancy soaps etc as Christmas gifts.

Isn't it funny how we all have preference for wood or plastic.I like wood. The feel of it the aroma. The natural appearance of wood.If I miss on wood I can fill the mistake.I find with plastic the mark never seams to go away.

Alice has come to the rescue as usual and found that shining a bright torch onto the laser cut sheets, she can see, (I can't) a very faint etched number and she is at this moment, marking in with a soft pencil.
Hopefully, problem solved.

Hi Pete, I would have expected every piece to be numbered, but they certainly are not. On two sheets, some pieces are labelled, but they are the decks and it is pretty obvious what they are.

There should be numbers on the item to be used Nerys, or next to it on the cut out sheet, I have never seen a sheet without numbers, can I suggest you contact Deans and ask them about it, it may be a problem they are unaware of.😊

Hi Nerys.
I very much doubt it's you being thick, more a case of Deans being slack with their instructions as previously discussed.
Can you photograph the parts sheets so we can see the problem, perhaps run a pencil around the parts on the sheets first so that they can be seen clearer in the pictures and perhaps we can all help identify their correct numbering for you ?
Would that be helpful?

As for once. I felt up to a little modelling today.I had another look at the LST kit. I had a look at the laser cut sheets, first couple, easy to recognise, the main decks, but then we come to everything that sits on that and I am lost. In the 'instructions' every part is numbered, but on the sheets to cut out nothing is numbered. It does say to write the numbers on the sheets before detaching but there is nothing showing the numbers at all. I've tried recognising parts from the instructions, but to no avail. Is this me, just being thick?
Any ideas?

In hope, Nerys

My wife’s aunt Janice lives in England. She was born here in Texas, met Dave, an Englishman, in the Peace Corps when she was young, and moved to England a short time later. If you didn’t know her you’d swear she was born English. No trace of the Texas drawl left, y’all.
I had a buddy I used to run with named Amon. He spent the first half of his life in England, where he was born, then the family moved to Queens, New York. He had been in Texas about 2 years when I met him. If he got excited and started talking fast, you almost couldn’t understand him!!😁

Pleased to hear you have had a bit of a run out, we are planning a timber buying expedition this morning, followed by a food shop. Need timber for the second bed in the camper, first one worked out well. Hobbycrafts are no use for the modeller, they are alright if you want to make stuff to sell at the church bazaar. I can't say I've noticed much dolls house bits in Abergavenny, but I wasn't looking for it. He was quite keen on talking about drones though!

All the best, Nerys

Thank you Nerys, we are fine at present, spent the morning in Kidderminster with son and daughter in law Xmas shopping, followed by afternoon in hereford doing our monthly shop.
Tried a couple of hobbycraft shops but nothing of use for my modelling needs.
Looks like I will have to look online, I now remember the Abergavenny shop, Caroline used to get her dolls house items from them back in the early 2000's.
Have they changed the management or owners as it was nearly all dolls house and railway stuff when we last visited about 2005.
I'll have to look at their website.
Cheers Colin.

Hi Colin,
Surprised you didn't know about them as they are so near you. It's Abergavenny Model Centre, 1 Brecon Road, NP7 5UH. They are a general model shop for everything. Trains an' boats an' planes etc. Check that they are open before going to visit as I know they closed for a week recently and were only open for collection of orders. They have a website, have a look and see what you think. they could be of use to you. I've been able to buy a few bits and pieces, plus timber, but I wouldn't say he has a huge range of boat stuff.
Trust you and Caroline are well and bearing up under present circumstances.

Best wishes, Nerys and Alice

Could be worth a trip as Hereford doesn't cater for us boat modellers.

My first two boats were kits from Cornwall Model Boats and I have used them for bits and pieces ever since. They seem to me to have a more comprehensive stock than others and normally good delivery. The majority of the boats I have built all have strip lime deck planking from them, I've used it extensively for that and lots of other things. My nearest model shop is in Abergavenny, the other end of the Black Mountains, but apart from it being a long way to go, it's also Covidly denied.

I use Cornwall model boats for planking, they have always been very good.
I also use Leeds model shop as my main source of parts mainly because they are just up the road from me and I can call in any time, (covid 19 permitting) they also have a good online business.

Well done Nerys, any progress is good for the morale.
As we are going into lockdown again, tomorrow I'm going to see what supplies I can get in ready.
I've done some practice cuts on my cricut, windows for the sea commander , using old pieces of acrylic sheet, just to prove it works.
So now looking to buy some new stock ready.

I felt up to doing a bit today, not a lot, but the fact that I felt I could do anything is a bonus. As I am waiting on motors and things for the LST, I did a little on the barge, getting the foredeck and mastcase deck fitted. Not worth a photo at this stage, but it did cheer me up that I managed even that meagre progress,

Cheers, Nerys
