Hi Bruce.
I have seen your latest build log. It looks really good so far.
The one I am having difficulty with is Dusseldorf. Your last post was a redirect to pictures. I have never managed to open it. Thanks.

Peter, I believe Slipway being a cottage industry once they retired there was no one with the finances or skills to take on the business. Shame really as after they and the other produceRSM of lifeboats finished, that was it, no more kits!

Sorry Sy. I know you would do better than me at building her but as you can imagine, I was on the waiting list for one for quite a while.
Why did Model Slipways stop producing. Is there a chance somebody will take over and produce them again.
Peter.😉

I use what is called a panelbeaters touch up gun. Has a small 150ml bottom feed container and is very controllable. I have tried airbrushes and have a couple of Iwata ones but using them to paint large surfaces is painful.

Hi mturpin013,

I use the cheapies off of ebay.
The only thing i do is when i first get them i use a drill with a felt pad fitted and some chrome cleaner and i polish the needle tips.

Then the lightest smear of vasoline on the needle before spraying, this helps to prevent tip dry.

And i find they work great, from fine thin lines to wider sprays.

I have only had one Airbrush that was pretty useless so i striped it down and kept the useful parts for spares.

Re PS Not using acrylics on boats is rubbish. When fully cured they are totally waterproof.

Quite true Doug, we paint our houses, / roofs etc with acrylics and nothing will touch it. Just painted my roof with acrylic. I use Reeves artists acrylic for lots of model bits, including the insides of hulls (and straight over f/glass nice and thick) never had any come off,- totally waterproof. Even cars are being sprayed with the new auto acrylics now as they are much safer on health and environment.

I use Reeves metallic acrylic bronze on my plastic props (which spin at 8000rpm in the HSL for eg) and it hasn't budged.

Sheesh, pints of paint!
How damn big IS your boat Bruce? Are you building a full size?
I used to use a gun like that to spray cars.😮
If I were you then I would just go for the nearest Fed Std paint you can find in this chart.
https://hobbylandbg.com/colourtable
I don't think you'll need anywhere near a pint for most of the colors as they are only for detail work.
Doug 😎

If you're worried you can always seal it with a clear lacquer anyway.

Thank you
I use a larger spray gun tha sprays 2- 4 inch pattern I find smaller air brushes for large areas too time consumming. and get blouchy results..I'm using a Iwata baby seriers LPH-80-102G with a 150ml cup and a 70ml cup on my other gun. it works better for me anyways. buying that many cans is way to expensive, I buy most of my boat paint from Total boat for $18 for a pint polyurethane marine topside paint. and it will hold up to water, where most of the model paints tell you not to use it on boats that wilbe used in the water especially the acrylic paint the are water based.
total boat http://www.totalboat.com/product/wet-edge/
https://www.amazon.com/ANEST-IWATA-lph-80-124G-Spray-Series/dp/B001Q8WNH8
The reason i'm looking for some of these colors is the boating people don't have the colors i need and international orange for this boat is different than USA orange so i'm looking for the color code so i can get it made at one of our auto paint stores.
I do appppricate your input a lot thank you

Hi Martin what brand of air brush do you use/ recommend, I have tried a couple of cheapies of the internet but wasn't impressed. I usually use a full size top feed gun with 250ml capacity but can see the benefits of a small air brush

Hi bruce1946,
I use an Airbrush to spray all my model boats big or small.

When working on a big Hull's i mix up plenty of paint and just keep topping up the Airbrush.
For the large areas i use the Airbrush with the glass jar attached.

I use the the small tins of Humbrol paint.

I hope you will do a Build Log.

I'm getting ready to build my Trent class Lifeboat and Humbrol paint

Hi Bruce,

I've been through the model paints and I've found this:

Humbrol Tamiya RAL Revell
18 Orange X06 2004 32130
19 Signal red X07 3000 32181
15 Midnight Blue X03 5022 32152
130 White XF02 9010 32301
56 Aluminium XF56 ---- 32199
67 Tank Grey XF63 7024 32178
85 Coal black X18 9005 36202
40 Pale Grey --- ---- -----

I got the cross references from the attached weblink.

One thought that I had, is that you could get a bunch of paint testers made up at home depot or lowes paint dept's which would be cheaper than using the model paints (they would use the RAL numbers). All you would need to do is put them through an airbrush and a coat of varnish to protect them.

Good luck

I agree with Nerys most people looking at the boat will not know if the color is correct or not.You as the builder have artistic licence to chose the colors that best match the color scheme.

Why bother too much, why not just use generic colours that look as near as possible. Who is going to notice in the US of A.

Hi Bruce,

If you can give the humbrol numbers, we should be able to match it to the RAL numbers which the real boats would be painted in.

I'm getting ready to build my Trent class Lifeboat "Model slipway" they gave colors for Humbrol gloss enamel paint. But I can't find containers of paint big enough to air brush / air gun a surface this large. I don't want to use a rattle can, the largest containers i can find are .5 oz. 14.7mL and they are all acrylic Matt.
What are you using to paint larger RC boats that match Humbrol paints? I'm in the USA please don't hold that against me. LOL
Thanks in advance.
