Changed from brushed to brushless and LIPO, the boat now weighs a lot less and is very fast. (Motor: Turingy 3600KV) (10/10)

The boat is very fast because its so light. The top speed of the boat is way more than scale speed but when I slow down it runs for about 1/2 hour. I tried a top spec racing battery in it and it started to bounce around and leap out of the water. Not scale speed but huge fun! (Motor: Raboesch) (ESC: Mtroniks Viper Marine 20) (8/10)

Orginaly I had a scoop in-line with the prop but on the left of the hull. (see the photo below) This wasn't very effective and pulled the boat to one side. I modified this by moving the rudder back about 10mm and fitted a piece of curved acrylic tube between the prop and rudder to pick up the water. I think as long as you fit the scoop behind the prop in the flow of water, it should work well. The outlet is on the side of the hull, it would work just as well on the back.

Today I used a CNC Miller to make the mould for the cabin. The cabin was designed In ProEngineer first and then milled.
The mould was milled from a dense foam material.
After milling the mould I used a vacuum former to make the cabin In clear polypropylene.

Got the propshaft and motor in, it runs very smooth and quietly
I filled the front 2 sections with expanding foam so if the boat ends up upside down, full of water it should still float and I'll be able to rescue it.

๐ฌ Boat stand, ESC and Servo

I will be using a 35mm 2 blade prop on either 7.4V or 11.1V LiPO, I took this set up out of my Police Boat before converting it to brushless and it worked fine with no overheating problems. ESC was running about 45C.
I was thinking more along the lines of sealing it with primer (Project budget running low)
I've got the thin epoxy, can't remember the brand but the school have used it before for sealing wood, I experimented with it on my wood, works well. I did one thin coat, left it to dry, sanded, 2nd coat then sanded again. Then I sprayed it with Plastikote primer then went over that with 2 coats of fluorescent yellow and the finish was perfect.
Time to have a go at propshaft.

Today I made the boat stand, used the trick of wrapping solder round the hull to get the shape then transferred it onto the wood and cut it out.
Also fitted the rudder, rudder servo and ESC.
The ESC is only 30A but will be fine for the graupner 600 plus it has LiPo cut off.

Today I got the hull of the building board. This was done by prising and smashing the bulkhead supports of the building board. I think the hull looks good and it only weighs 550 grams.
Next job is the boat stand.....

Thanks for your help, once I have the hull finished and the deck on I will go for the cloth and epoxy, could do with the extra strength if I decide to put an engine in the boat.

I have heard about coating wooden hull's in thinned epoxy, has anyone tried this before?

For my Engineering Diploma I have to do a project so I'm going to build a powerboat.
From looking at some photos I managed to draw up the bulkheads and make this model in ProEngineer. The cabin needs some more work.

I would recommend you go for deans connectors. I used tamiya ones in my police boat and they melted within a few minutes, since I changed to deans connectors the boat is a slight bit faster and the connectors don't even get warm.

I swapped the tamiya connectors for deans connectors now I can go flat out without worrying about melting anything.
Also added a cooling fan to the ESC to keep It cooler.
Didnt want to try and water cool It Incase of a leak which would be a disaster with the LiPo In.
To keep the LiPo safer I have fitted windows to the back cabin, I will get some photos......

With the boat weighing a lot less it was a lot faster. Although over half the boat was out of the water it planed fairly level but was very difficult to drive.
And after a few minutes of driving with LIPO the tamiya connector's melted, so I will be changing to deans connectors.
Next time the boat goes out I will get some video.

The rest of the parts arrived and the motor is now in.
Tested it in the bath and the power was incredible, easily twice the power of the graupner 600, next is a test on the lake.
I also brought a 7.4V 4000mah LIPO pack for my car so while I'm at it I'll see what it can make the boat do.

๐ Brushless ESC + Motor
15 years ago by
๐ฌ๐ง Police Boat Captain (

The brushless ESC is now in, its un branded but is rated for 50 amps and up to 22V so should easily be able to handle the motor. I connected it up to the motor and it works ok just a little cogging at low speed because the motor is sensoreless.
The motor is a Turingy 3600 KV inrunner with a built in cooling coil, I found out after ordering it that out runners have more torque and stay cooler. (should have done more research). I'll give it a run with different sized props and voltages, then change to an outrunner if there are problems.

Being a long time since the last update. I now have some very good looking POLICE and 442 stickers.
Also fitted 2 searchlights to the cabin roof one facing forward and one facing backwards.
To finish the fittings of I went for a set of bollards.

I have the same problem with my seaplane tender, it leaps out of the water and almost stands verticaly.
to slow it down I reprogrammed the ESC. instead when you are meant to give it full power then press the setup button I gave it just over half.
I can now pull the trigger all the way back and the boat planes safely now. ๐
another thing I tried whilst using my spectrum conroler was to just adjust the end point for the throttle.
