So, today saw the Pilot Boat off to the lake for a test sailing. Pleased to report that on 2S, whilst not fast, probably fast enough for the new owner as a first boat. If I was keeping it, I would go 3S.

She zips along very nicely and was the brunt of many questions from walkers by! I have taken some video and will convert and add that at some point over the next day or so.

On to the next build soon.........!

Great to see a finished project, don't know how you can let it go. I've just started the Vintage Model Works Police launch, very nice kit well presented, the same one Rob did.

Many thanks for all the compliments guys๐Ÿ‘New owner collecting Saturday and has asked for it to be 3S! I shall be taking them to the lake for a supervised sailing before we part company ๐Ÿ˜ฌ! This is only the second and probably the last commission build I shall take on as without sounding โ€œjackโ€ I enjoy the hobby for my own means, but always happy to share what I know and learn from others on this forum.

Whilst I have several options for my next build, I feel that I have decided to build the 1:12 Lesro Atlantic 21 RIB. This is because itโ€™s an old design, no longer made and as far as I can tell the guy who was selling the moulded parts on eBay has not many if any left to sell. I bought a set off him, glad I did as I can only imagine they are possibly originals left over from Lesro as they are very good. I am still trying to source a set of full scale plans to help with the detailing, but can probably get away with using reference pics to the most part. The one thing I need to get accurate is the rear frame as Iโ€™ve no reference for it. I shall be going 400 sized brushless D2826 1000kv on 3S. Dave Watts at mastman is going to be selling the evenrude dummy motors which Iโ€™ve pre ordered and DK figures for the Coxswain. Once Iโ€™ve got a few more bits in place, the build will start.

So, after a day of finishing off the wiring and battery fittings for the radar and lights, and adding the dummy lights and rigging to the mast, I feel Iโ€™ve done enough to consider this model finished. I have test floated it in the wifeโ€™s hot tub (cash cow!) and after adding 2x500g lead ingots Iโ€™ve got it sitting what I think looks right in the water.

Weather permitting Tomorrow Iโ€™m going to give her a run on the lake with a 2S and 3S lipo pack and see whatโ€™s what with scale speed ect. Iโ€™m thinking that 2S will be ample, especially as the new owner has no boat experience! Hopefully will get a few running shots in the can for a final update and hopefully a bit of video too.

I donโ€™t get too sentimental over my boats Pete, I will always keep my Orca as I put a lot of work into it and for the sentimentality side of it being from my favourite film. Storage space is also an issue and I move onto the next project hoping to make it better than the last. My trouble is, Iโ€™m very critical of my own ability and sometimes feel that I could have done something better or different, Iโ€™m never satisfied!

Itโ€™s been awhile since I last posted as Iโ€™ve had a lot of other things on that have taken me away from the building board.

Anyway, Iโ€™ve managed to get the basic mast array finished and painted. Just need to add all the Lamps (non working) once Iโ€™ve finished and painted them. Once the mast is installed on the roof, it has a little bit of rigging to be added to call it finished.

Iโ€™ve also rigged the 1.5v motor for the functioning radar. I did try and upload a couple of short video clips that I took on my iPhone, however for whatever reason, they donโ€™t seem to install. Iโ€™m guessing Iโ€™m trying to load a wrong file type, so if anyone has a solution to uploading an iPhone video file, Iโ€™m all ears!

I have Tuesday and Wednesday off work and it is my intention to have this model finished, ballasted, filmed and photographed on the water and off to its new owner so that I can get on with my next project which will be.........?

Re: iPhone videos, they are probably .mov files and the best format for websites is .mp4 so you may need to find an on-line conversion site or download an app to do the conversion.
Here's one such site I've just Googled: https://cloudconvert.com/mov-to-mp4 I've never tried it but there are many similar sites.

I may well do Martin, the moulded parts arrived today. Iโ€™m trying to source the original full size plans, or copies at least and any info on the flat sheet parts as Iโ€™ve no info on them. There is very little out there on previous builds, so will probably come back to the forum for advice on going the brushless route ect as this was originally designed around brushed motors. ๐Ÿ“ Furuno radar, railings and mast....
    1 month ago by Skydive130 ( Commander)

    View All
Been a busy weekend finishing the railings, painting and fitting. The bottom rail is made from strips of plasticard approx 1mm x 3mm with a reinforcement on the back with plastic tube cut in half to make a clamp. The hole assembly was painted of the boat then fitted. The rope work around the front end of the railing was with thanks to the reference pictures supplied by Rob ๐Ÿ‘

The Furuno radar was scratch built with wood cores followed by plasticard sheet to make the external shape. Itโ€™s as near as damn it scale and Iโ€™m very pleased with the end. Result. Just needs the 1.5v motor fitting underneath to finish.

Last job today was to start making the basic mast array. The Main mast is 7mm glassfibre rod and the rest will be made from Carbon rod, brass rod and little bits of plasticard. So, I hope to have it finished next weekend, Ballast and a quick sale for photos before it goes to its new owner .....!

Your probably right Martin, building the basic model especially if a kit is generally easy and enjoyable. But the real pleasure Is looking at a reference pic and saying โ€œhow can I replicate thatโ€!

Long day Well afternoon due to household chore prior, of what Seems little progress. Iโ€™ve made up the initial framework for the main cabin frame work. Lots of drilling once hole locations were measured and established then soldering the eyes to the uprights and lining up the main railing. Iโ€™ve done the railing in 2 pieces as I didnโ€™t have a length of 1.5mm brass wire long enough to do the whole run, but at the front were it joins, Iโ€™ve put a little brass sleeve over the joins to hide them. Looks fine.

Once all the uprights were soldered to the raining, the whole thing was removed to file all the solder joints, 90minutes of my life I ainโ€™t getting back! Either tomorrow or Monday I will finish the second run of railing below the top piece. However this appears to be a flat railing instead of tubular so I shall make this from plasticard strip adopt 1mmx3mm running The length of the top railing.

All thatโ€™s left after this is the working radar and mast, ballast and she will be good to go. One last point, Iโ€™ve swapped the 3S lipo for a 2s lipo, as I think the 3S will be too much. Can always put it back if itโ€™s underpowered on 2s?

    Hi Sy.
Looks really good to me, I just hope mine comes out as well as yours.
The lower rail is actually a safety line attachment rail for the crew to secure themselves to as they move about the deck. I think it's called a UniRail system and looks a bit like a model railway 'rail'.
I've found some pix of the rail...and also the radar unit which I'll be scratch building but using a commercially made drive motor and controller, not cheap but looks quite well designed and ideal for my purposes.
    Hope that helps.

The motor and controller you have Iโ€™ve had before, I used one on my Solent lifeboat a couple of years ago and it worked well. Just using a 9g converted 360 servo thi# time round, ยฃ1.99! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Doesnโ€™t seem like of progress, but windows take an age to cut from 1mm plasticard followed by the trimming, sanding and blade scraping prior to painting. Anyway, front and rear windows now done and installed along with the remaining wiper boxes.

Last job today was to solder from brass rod the remaining rear railing until before adding liefebelt and glueing to the deck.

Iโ€™ve a few chores around the house tomorrow but aim to get get the remaining 4 windows made in between husband duties ๐Ÿ˜‚

    ๐Ÿ“ Roof vent build sequence....
    2 months ago by Skydive130 ( Commander)

    View All
For those who were interested in how I built the roof vents, here is my method. Started with a piece of obechi cut to required length and sanded round at the ends then sealed prior to painting. The ring next is from 7mm plastic tube cut to 2mm, cleaned up and glued to the wood. The next stage was to use the heat gun to soften the end of the 7mm tube and press with pingers to squash (be careful here as the plastic gets quite hot) then cut to length about 12mm. Using the dremel on a slow speed with the sander bevelled the base and then trimmed off the corners. Final after glueing to the top of the ring, filled the end with p38 filler and sand and paint to finish.

Last post of the week before heading back to work for a 3 day set of shifts.

last couple Of days has seen the first of the windows cut from plasticard, painted and fitted with celluloid windows. I will do the rest at the weekend, but itโ€™s a thankless task and to be truthful does my head in cutting, sanding the damn things....

Iโ€™ve made the first of the 2 rear railings that the life belts hang from, and other little jobs have included the 2 mushroom antenna on the roof made from scrap and the 6 Vent things on the roof again made from scrap.

The light to finishing is appearing at the end of the tunnel.

If your talking about those thingys on the roof Rob? The base is a piece of obechi sanded to a slight curve at the ends. After that a 2mm slice length of 8mm Plastic rod on top. The hardest part was the top piece, again 8mm plastic rod heated with the heat gun till soft, then finger pressed to the shape. The piece was then cut to about 11-12mm and glued on top of the 2mm ring, the hole at the back filled with P38 and shaped and sanded.

I should have photographed it in production!

Got a little more done today in between a job ordered by the โ€œMrsโ€ i.e. fence painting!

Finished making and painting the wiper boxes and stuck on with masking tape for the photo. They will get fitted properly after the wind frames are fitted as they overlap the bottom edge of the frame.

The only other major job today was the finish making the life raft container mountings and the funny metal plate thingy in front of it, followed by its paint job and final fitting.

    Tomorrow will be windows day!

    Hi Sy.
I have some solvent weld black in 36mm size in the garage, if I rummage deep enough though I may find some 32mm white but that might be push-fit polythene which won't glue and paint very well, either way it's pretty cheap from Screwfix.

Good day today aiming to stop in time for the mighty West Ham United on sky sports....!

Iโ€™ve had a day of scratch building antennas on the roof, starting to make the 3 wiper boxes from obechi core and covered in plasticard for a better painting surface, wiper arm from brass wire. Iโ€™ve also cut some sponsorship Logos from vinyl solar trim leftover from my aircraft days. The searchlights are now also fitted but weโ€™re one of the few commercial items I bought.

I have also finished Adding all the rubber fendering which took a while but has the desired effect!

The next couple of days should see the bulk of the remaining parts finished and fitted, next jobs are to finish the lifeboat canister and mount and the remaining 2 wiper boxes before I get on with the window frames and light wiring loom. The mast and radar are the 2 remaining larger builds.

I think the radar, mast, windows and remaking railings will set it right off Martin ๐Ÿ‘
