Not had a lot of time the past few days now that I have to work again! Things will ease up once Iโ€™ve finished my 2 week induction and start my regular shifts!

Anyway, having got home, had tea and walked the dog, the past 3 evenings has seen cabin prep, sanding, filling and sealing, followed by primer and the Orange top coat. Might give it one more light coat before it gets its final gloss lacquer. Having stared at my reference photos, Iโ€™m guessing the window frames are white and not silver like RNLI boats, well white their gonna be! If someone cryโ€™s silver before I paint, let me know!

Iโ€™m trying to remind myself this model is stand-off scale and not 100% accurate! I wish Iโ€™d canted the cabin sides in further and the bollard cut outs on the side should be bigger. But Iโ€™m going to live with it. Once Iโ€™ve added the list of detailing parts that Iโ€™ve made hopefully it will be a nice representation.

Still a bit of rubbing back to be done on the hull oxide red to flatten a couple of high spots, then I can reapply the red, mask and add the black sides and non slip deck coat.

    Hi Sy.
Excellent work as usual. Agreed about the cabin sides and the bollard recesses, I'll make sure to avoid the same on mine. I will be interested to see where the waterline is and if it crosses the rubbing strake if at all, I always have trouble with that bit ๐Ÿ˜

'I wish Iโ€™d canted the cabin sides in further', I see what you mean Sy, looks a little boxy... but still nice and much better than the original shape, I think when the black top windows are on, it will make a great difference.๐Ÿ˜Š

Hi Rob, my mistakes should give you the opportunity to knock yours out of the park!

Without ballast as is at the moment without all the other extras Iโ€™m adding, she is sitting straight and true on the chine, so only needs to go down a little more. Will see where we are at the end before I start putting lead bricks in ๐Ÿ˜‚

Hi Martin, yes indeed, all windows including the simulated roof windows will have a frame made from plasticard and will have a second layer to take the glazing. The frames will be glued on using canopy glue so any window glazing not that I plan too That gets glue on them shouldnโ€™t show as it dries clear. Iโ€™ve stuck glazing on with cyano in the past, bad mistake!

Kind regards Sy p.s very much enjoying watching your scratch built tug Martin ๐Ÿค™

Have been given kind permission by the โ€œbossโ€ to have a few hours today on condition we go for a drive to a secluded Suffolk coast beach tomorrow to walk the dog! Wasnโ€™t going to argue so onwards ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Gave the hull a final clean up this morning and gave it 4 coats of red Halfords primer for the below waterline red oxide colour. Iโ€™ve since covered that so it doesnโ€™t get grubby and scuffed whilst I prepare the rest of the hull for its grey primer, textured deck and black finish, but thatโ€™s for another day.

I also finished the bow Cabin superstructure Wood work and have P38 filled and sanded any gaps. The hole thing now needs to be sealed, sanded and checked for any further filling before priming. I intend to give the interior either a coat of grey primer and maybe black on top of that as Iโ€™m not adding any interior detail, I shall see what the grey looks like before deciding. Once thatโ€™s done, Iโ€™ll glue the cabin to the removable hatch, then any remaining filler before prepping the whole thing for paint.

I started to make the bollards today, needing 6 double in total. I always make mine from plastic tube and rod, that way they are virtually free to make and can be made any size and scale require. I also made the first of 2 cabin side vent intakes, again, plastic sheets laminated, rivets from 1.5mm plastic rod then spray painted silver with black Self adhesive solar trim left over from my aircraft modelling days, easier than painting! The grey tube is just B&Q plumbing pipe which will become the life raft container.

    Nice going Sy๐Ÿ‘
    Specially like the riveting.
Need idea for the bollards too.
Bit fiddly for my usual scales of 1:96 - 1:72 but worth a bash at 72 I guess.
As is usual the primer coat has shown up the odd blemish in an otherwise superb hull!
Trust you will fix the blemish on her 'rear end' ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ™ˆ before applying the top coat!?
    'A blemish Sir!? - Oh bollards!' ๐Ÿ˜

โ€œDonโ€™t panic Mr Mannwarringโ€ Any issues in the primer will be rubbed back ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ the photo makes it looks worst than it is, taking the picture in harsh sunlight exaggerated it.

I like a challenge, bollards in the scale are not too fiddly, if you remember from my Orca, I made glasses for Hooper and Brady and that was proper small, probably the reason I wear glasses so thick you can see into the future with em!๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿ“ The cabin continues some more ....!

So after starting my new job with the MOD at RAF Lakenheath Wednesday, Iโ€™ve managed to get a little bit of work done last night and this afternoon after my new boss gave me an early finish (cheers Dave!๐Ÿ‘)

Concentrated on finishing the cabin roof trusses, adding the roof and all the front window panels. Iโ€™ve decided that my roof window panels will be glass free and will either be painted on in black or I will use some self adhesive vinyl, as the photos of the real thing I have give the impression those windows are dark glass.

The weekend should see the front end finished and then I can start making all the detail bits. Iโ€™m planning on leaving the painting until everything is ready for prime and paint.

I did get the prop coupling in the post yesterday and after hooking that up, gave the motor, esc, prop combi a watt meter run in the wifeโ€™s hot tub before she came home and gripped me! So, the watt meter reading on a new charged 3S lipo with a 40mm brass prop gave an amp reading of 38a and that was not quite full chat! Iโ€™ve only got a 40a fuse in the line so didnโ€™t want to push it. The big thing though was the amount of thrust was incredible to the point that all the water in the hot tube was rotating! On the lake it would be the equivalent of a boat travelling faster than a startled gazelle, way too much. Iโ€™ve got a 30mm brass 3 blade, so Iโ€™m going the give that a whirl over the weekend and see if that calms things down! I could drop down to a 2S, but donโ€™t have any and donโ€™t wish to buy one if I donโ€™t have too. Please feel free to advise as necessary ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

    Hi Sy.
    Yes, I'm planning on using a 3S LiPo and I have a 40mm 2 blade plastic prop.
You could always programme the TX throttle channel to limit the forward speed if that's possible. That would tame the performance a bit!

I have a Turnigy i6 system and you can set servo limits so it might work although I've never tried it. Might be an easier option than experimenting with props.

Hi Rob, Mines the TGY-I6S under the Turnigy brand (HobbyKing relabelling) And exactly the same internals as the flysky i6! When I got it, it had the non centering left throttle stick, but I bought the conversion kit for it about $3 posted from HK and converted it to self centering throttle which was easy enough following YouTube. Perfect for mtroniks escโ€™s forward and reverse and with a little trial and error Iโ€™ve always managed to programme the Turnigy brushless escโ€™s for forward reverse as I have for this model. I do have a Turnigy esc programming card, but thatโ€™s designed for aircraft Escโ€™s, so useless for boats!

Point to note on the TGY-i6s is that it was designed for those clowns and their drones, also pretty good for the guys who play with Henglong tanks!

    Kind regards Sy

I did exactly the same with mine so that the throttle self centered, and I also updated the firmware to convert it from 6 chan to 10 chan so that I could assign an aux channel to one of the rotary pots to steer the searchlight on my crash tender.

Hi. Pete, I used the original side piece as the initial template and 2 pieceS of A4 paper to draw a rough version of the cabin. Made a practice cabin side from scrap wood, glued it to the original side then used that as a master template to make 2 new sides. After that I just made each piece direct to wood with careful measuring and referring to the reference pics for the shapes.

As I said to Rob earlier, I should have given the cabin sides a steep โ€œcantโ€œ (inward slope to the roof) But overall Iโ€™m pleased with the new shape.

Strange sort of day today? Managed to get an hour in before I had to pop over to RAF Lakenheath to pick up my new uniform ready for starting my new job tomorrow.

On the way back, picked up a couple of click n collect cans of spray to go with the ones I already have so now have the full range of primers, colours, and lacquer to finish the model when we get to that point.

One of the photos shows my scrap strip, sheet, and metal/plastic/brass and wire. A couple of months ago they were all pretty full, but have taken a massive hit after my โ€œOrcaโ€ Build and this, to the point Iโ€™m struggling for some stuff, but will manage!

The remain couple of hours today has seen the rear of the cabin structurally finished less filler, sealing and sanding. Still to do is the angled roof panels and the front end of the cabin. I shall now give you guys a 3 day breather as that will be until the weekend ๐Ÿ˜ข

Have managed to get 2-3 hours in today inbetween husband duties, walking the dog ect.

The main effort today was making the cross members to support the cabin walls and the rear wall panel. After a good amount of measuring, have managed to get all the framing complete with the cabin sitting (not glued at this point) on the removeable hatch. The front hatch roof is now fitted, but the cabin main roof and the cabin bow will take a little careful working to get a nice shape. my reference pictures are limited, but I think ive managed a fair represention of the real thing? there will bealot of handmade details to add once the cabin structure is filled, sanded, sealed and there will be plasticard window frames too.

I will try and get as much of the cabin structure finished tomorrow before I start my new job wednesday, things will then slow down im afraid to say until the weekend.

It's coming together nice Sky๐Ÿ‘, the upper cabin roof and windows look like the could be tricky, as the angles are going to be difficult to work out just off a photo, but best of luck, I'm sure you will master the task.๐Ÿ˜Š

    ๐Ÿ“ Letโ€™s start the cabin!
11 days ago by Skydive130 ( Lieutenant Commander)

Late start today, chores at home had to be done in the first instance!

Started with finishing the rudder linkage, nice slop free connection. I did solder a brass spacer onto the rudder post so that the rudder doesnโ€™t foul the small keel protrusion. Also finished setting the motor mount using a fixed coupling made of brass tube with a plastic tube sleeve and the motor is in perfect alignment. Hopefully the coupling will be here in the next few days so I can make that fixture permanent.

It was then time to start planning my cabin which was always going to involve major surgery if I wanted it to resemble the Southampton boat I hope to represent. Using the kit side, I made a template on paper of what I wanted the cabin to look like, did a little chopping on the side piece, made a cabin piece and made sure it looked right on the model. I then transferred this all to a fresh sheet of ply and cut it out on my scroll Saw. What I do before cutting out, is to score several times all straight lines on the wood with a Stanley knife before cutting out, giving the scroll saw blade itโ€™s own guide for a straighter cut. Cut out the windows on one side, then finished the day with a mock up on the hull for an idea of what it will look like soon.

Should be too much in the way of mods once Iโ€™ve made the cabin Martin. Thankfully looking at the reference photos I have, thereโ€™s not much in the way of bits n pieces on a pilot boat apart from bollards, railings ect ๐Ÿ‘

    Hi Sy.
That cabin is coming along very nicely already๐Ÿ‘ I'm looking to see how that develops with great interest, and I can already see that your version will be a vast improvement over the kit version.
BTW. Your water pickup seems very low in the keel, it should work just fine but looks a bit odd, I did get the same set for mine but they don't look too good so I chose to do my own, courtesy of my brother and his lathe for the turned base. ๐Ÿ˜
    Keep up the great work.

Hi Rob, personally I thought the kit cabin shape was aweful, and I couldnโ€™t find any reference to areal one looking like it, hence my change. The cabin will take a bit of effort to modify, but thatโ€™s why we enjoy the challenge of our hobby.

Your Water pick up Looks fantastic, sadly I have no access to tools or anyone with the skills to bend tube like that. Iโ€™m confident my pick up will gather enough water from the prop wash to do itโ€™s thing. I done one exactly the same on an Aeronaut Jenny and the water gushed out of the outlet like a jet! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘

Good progress today getting the remaining rails, frames ect fitted. Itโ€™s taken a few hours to get all these bits on, some using heat, steam, boiling water ect to get them to conform to the curves.

After all pieces were fitted, used some P38 filler to fill and gaps and sanded that back before 2 coats of sanding sealer on bare wood, sanding between.

After a good clean and de-grease, final job of the day was to give the complete hull less the deck a thinned coat of resin leaving to set up over night.

Will start looking at the cabin tomorrow and see how I can alter that from the kit norm.

I was speaking with Rob who is doing the other build blog and he also glass cloths his deck and cabin, but I wonโ€™t be. I shall seal the wood prior to prime and paint. ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ“ Spray and lift rails, rubbing fenders and side frames
13 days ago by Skydive130 ( Lieutenant Commander)
    Flag
    View All
The work today was a late start as I had to go to the Base and finalise my Army discharge paperwork and hand in my ID card after 36 years, a surreal day indeed! Starting my new job next week in the MOD at USAF Lakenheath, a new challenge and fast jets!

After all that, gave the hull another sand followed by a session with the wet n dry ending up with a super smooth surface. Then made a start on the spray and life rails following Robs advice on making them triangular. Easy with the Davy plane and the flat plate sandpaper. The spray rail or curved on one edge and this took a little more effort to get right, but again, a little careful use of heat formed it round the curve of the bow.

Last thing to day was to Start fitting a 10mm fender rail Which I will do in sections for ease, it gets covered with rubber D-fendering anyway. I used the kit included 6.5mm wood strip, but I think it would have been better if they had included 5mm which will form round the bow easier. I have some in my spares box, so will use a double strip of this round the tighter curves of the box and transom.

My very last thing was to fit one of the side frames which was remarkably easy, and only require a little sand to follow the fender wood nicely. And tiny gaps in rails, ect got a dollop of P38 filler and has been sanded back. Once all the rails are on, any bare wood will get a coat of sealer, then 1 final thinned coat of resin prior to painting.

Who said it was honourable Rob! Just kidding, got a certificate (no gold carriage clock!) โ€œon completion of 36 years exemplary service in the coloursโ€

As for the spray rails! My method was to cut down to about an inch longer than required, then I have an old towel on the work bench that stops the piece of wood sliding. Then with by Davy plane And the wood held firmly on a corner edge, I carefully shave it down to just shy of the triangle then finish with sanding plate. When Iโ€™m planeing, I just do a few careful inches at a time, with care it takes about 10 minutes e@ch strip ready to cyano on to my line marked on the hull with a sharpie. Hope that helps Rob, if not, let me know and Iโ€™ll try and show it tomorrow with pictures when I do the other side ๐Ÿ‘

Thanks for the description Sy, since I asked the question I've found a offcut length of decking board that has long parallel grooves that holds the strip very firmly while I plane it down. I don't know why I didn't think of it before ๐Ÿค”.

Rob, I was thinking if I was going to be making lots of triangular section, it would be worth finding a suitable โ€œbitโ€œ for my Bosch router and making a groove in a length of base board, might do that one day! On smaller models Iโ€™ve used hard balsa triangular stock, not as robust though.

So, yesterday had limited time at hand, but managed to seal and sand the inner hull and gave it a slosh of resin before bed!

Todayโ€™s, main task was to make up the fuse and on/off switch harness and the wooden mount for it, all done, sanded and painted and it screws onto the middle frame making it removable for maintenance If required.

Also, primed and rattle can sprayed the inside of the hull, finished with a light coat of lacquer. Rob, you may recognise the blue black colour which I had left over from a previous build that we both did!

Last jobs today, after a T-bone steak dinner, were to install some of the electronics and then give the outer hull another coat of resin. Done for the day!

    Hi Sy.
Another productive days work there ๐Ÿ‘
Your internals layout is almost identical to mine and yes, I recognise the colour ๐Ÿ˜.
You'll need to put the spray rails on the chines and the lift rails on the bottom soon, I machined the bottom rails to a triangular section instead of half round, to be more authentic and give better lift at slow speeds. And also using half round neoprene foam on the rubbing strakes and side fenders, but I expect you've already thought of that too.
    The steak looks delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹.

    The steak was lush Rob!

Iโ€™m starting the think that rubbing strakes and spray rails is next, and spookily enough, yes Iโ€™m going for half round fendering too, which arrived in the post a couple of days ago! The triangular section is what I did on my Orca, so would make sense to repeat ๐Ÿ‘. I wonโ€™t be putting the half round D-fender On until the hull is painted using contact adhesive like Iโ€™ve done on lifeboats seems to work.

Hi Rob, my intended colours will be black hull, red oxide below water line, orange cabin and a black deck like the โ€œSouthampton Pilotโ€ I pictured right at the start of the build. Iโ€™ve got some spray texture paint (Homebase) that Iโ€™ve used on lifeboats, and looks very effective on the deck, so thatโ€™s going on too. ๐Ÿ‘

I may approach my side frames slightly different Rob? Iโ€™ve just checked my last coat of resin this morning whilst making a brew and Iโ€™m pleased with the result, so not keen to add another coat? Iโ€™ll leave the frames a bit and concentrate on the rails next!

Rob, now that your fender frame method is stuck in my head, I may follow suit and tack on with cyano and give the whole hull a thinned coat of resin after all? Iโ€™ve always used z-poxy finishing resin, Iโ€™ve never tried anything else as I get on with it. I always thin with meths (no Doug, Iโ€™m not a secret meths drinker ! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚), use cheap, but good disposable brushes and just chuck em after each coat. My resin mixing Pots come courtesy of my trusty hound โ€œdog food foil dishesโ€, over the years the amount of times a stray dog hair has found its way into paint or resin, I think Iโ€™ve a part of my dog in every build! Maybe one more 50/50 thinned coat will do no harm!

    Hi Sy.
I use EasyComposites 100gsm twill cloth and resin on the hull first which makes it super strong, then after rubbbing down I use Z-Poxy finishing resin over that 'cos it cures really fast and rubs down to a super finish for paint. The deck and cabin is covered with a 50gsm cloth and Z-Poxy too.
The final coat of Z-Poxy on the hull is really to seal all the wood strakes and fender frames.
Like you I use quality 25mm disposible brushes from Screwfix at 30p each. I use little aluminium Tuna pots for mixing but so far never found any fish bones in the in the resin..LOL ๐Ÿคฃ

Iโ€™ve only ever glass clothed hulls, or basically the parts that are in the water so to speak. Wooden decks, superstructure ect, I sanding seal, sand, sanding seal, sand and then prime with Halfords grey or red primer ready for paint, always given me a finish Iโ€™m happy with.

Might have to try that resin you use, looks cheaper in bulk than z-poxy which isnโ€™t cheap! ๐Ÿ‘

The EasyComposites resin is much cheaper by volume but it's essential to get the mix ratio absolutely correct (by weight) and it's cure time is ambient temperature sensitive, and also the surface has to be cleaned thoroughly with 'panel wipe' or else you get blotches and 'fish eyes' in the finish. Saying that I do get very good results if all the above precautions are observed.
Just as an experiment though, I used a lightweight glass cloth on the superstructure with some Eze-Kote which I'd never used before. It dries very quickly and you can build up a nice surface finish in no time. Flat it down with wet & dry and it's mirror smooth !
I do find that sanding sealer sometimes still lets the grain show through and hence the Eze-Kote experiment.

    ๐Ÿ“ Fuses and switches

So, after sound advice from Rob and Doug, I shall install a switch and fuse Holder/fuse, along with an MT60 connector for the motor wires. My box of fuses only go to 30 amp, so I may have to get a 40amp fuse, hopefully the watt meter will give a clue to my amps!

My next question will be where in the line to install the switch and fuse and I presume they go on the positive wire?

Looks like the same box of blades that I bought there๐Ÿ˜Š
Happy Piloting, watching the blog with interest.
    All the best, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž
PS Yes, your presumption is correct. For preference fuse in the + wire๐Ÿ‘
PPS I'd be very surprised if your set up needs anywhere near 40A.
If it does check your prop size and pitch.
Too big a prop often simply increases the load on the motor and hence the current draw.
Usually with no increase in performance.
Often precisely the converse in factโ˜น๏ธ

If I did it was a typo Doug, Iโ€™ve got fuses up to 30a and have ordered some 40a of eBay, if my motor runs higher amps than that we are in trouble! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
