What type of ship was the first to be fitted with a diesel engine?

Hallo.. this is first answer!
- To start, in 1902, the French submarine 'l'Aigrette' is launched with a M.A.N.-built diesel engine and electric propulsion. It is, thus, considered to be the first “ship or vessel” to be powered by a diesel engine. In this one ship, submarines developed around the world would use these basic designs.

WHOOPPEEEE, I am now still back up to 100%, after getting todays right. I dead reckoned I would get back to the 100% some time this year.
I won't stay there for long again.
I think I had a run of almost 3 weeks then started going down again.
I have been away off of here for 3 days as I went to the NEC for the Classic Car Show and done some fishing on the way there for a day and a days fishing on the way back.

Question of the Day?

HMS Driver, a paddle steamer with guns, is credited to be the first steamship to circumnavigate the world. Frigate may be a proper response for the first circumnavigation, but not for this question.
So many ships . . . and so little time . . .

Question of the Day?

Apparently the AI content may be limited to the US! Of course Titanic is closer to you than us so probably has been adopted, which does not explain having the Vasa as an answer.

HMS Victory is just famous for being the warship Nelson met his demise in. Also the answer USS Mississippi instead of HMS Driver gives an idea as to who did what first!

I shall be interested to know who is ascribed as the inventor of the Light Bulb! Another contested if not disputed question between nations.
I lurk in my sea of trivia oblivious to the real world of who or what or why.
Or OMG not again! QoD questions of course.

Huge guess, but was the HMS Driver really a frigate? Like so many other things right now I am totally lost and gutted. Hence, my recent lack of participation on my favorite site. With apologies, just trying to regroup. Most importantly, I still have my health.

Another “none of the above” type questions
The first steam powered circumnavigation was HMS Drake, a steam powered paddle wheel sloop.

Question of the Day?

But Vasa is in a museum, Victory is in Portsmouth and Titanic is famous for being Titanic which leaves one 'unknown' (well to me anyway) which has to be the answer.

I was listening to a BBC radio 4 programme yesterday talking about the harvesting of data for AI to generate 'information' from.
Most of it is done by people who become slaves to the computer and are paid a pittance for a long day's work as there is no other work where they are.
Teaching s/w and the like is very cheap to do. The speaker mentioned central Africa as the place. The slave workers are fixated by the job and are relentlessly measured for o/p of work. One point mentioned was to make decision on accepting or rejecting data every 55 seconds. The intensity of the work frequently breaks up marriages and families.

Any general complaints about wages could cause the data requirement to move elsewhere and the jobs would just vanish.
Also 'the Cloud' has become an insidious user of power.

The computers supporting these systems now have a bigger carbon footprint than the entire aircraft industry including airlines.

I did come across one statistic that suggested an individual doing a 'search' on their laptop which only took a few milli seconds used the same amount of power as boiling a kettle!

There is a data centre for the cloud not far from me and it is the largest one in Europe. It uses a sizeable chunk of all power used by the local population.

Typing this has associated costs!

Question of the Day?

My AI had this to say about the question That's correct! The SS Central America, also known as the "Ship of Gold," was a sidewheel steamer that sank off the coast of South Carolina in 1857 during a hurricane. It was discovered in 1985 and contained a treasure trove of gold and silver, estimated to be worth over $400 million. This discovery provided a fascinating glimpse into the past and a significant find for treasure hunters and historians alike. didn't use AI on answer just check with AI.

In fact none of them are even close .... sigh
So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

Question of the Day?

This was interesting, given that there two correct answers. I apparently chose the wrong one. The question is asking what is the process, not what is the operation. I would steam bend wood to form the planks. When putting the wood on the frames I would call it planking. However the process of forming the planks is steam bending. I will admit that you don't always have to steam them. Having watch the rebuilding of "Tally Ho" and the scratch build of "Arabella" (Acorn to Arabella) I learned a lot about wooden hull builds. I think the AI should watch the videos. 🤣🤣

Agreed Roy.
And that for some weeks now. Repeat after Repeat after Repeat after ...
Seems that Stephen's AI has run out of steam and simply switched into a loop mode.
That's why I (and apparently several other members) have long since dipped out of QOTD and Wordle as well.
It's my belief that QOTD and Wordle are strangling this once wonderful site and discouraging the real model boat enthusiasts. Witness; the diminishing numbers of posts actually pertaining to Model Boat building and operating.

Question of the Day?

I wouldn't have had a boat without a bilge pump, I also had a hand pump fitted and kept a bucket on board.
I done that on both of the boats I owned.
The first was and 18ft and the second was a 21ft.

But admittedly there does come a time when a bilge pump cannot cope with the input of water.

Good Day Gentleman! I gagged on the question, even though I knew the correct answer!

But, in lieu of opening a new topic, can anyone identify this hull. I believe it's an old Sterling kit, with a twin stuffing boxes. It's 33" long with 9" beam. The seller thinks it's a Dumas kit, I don't agree as the internals look like a Sterling kit to me...I seriously could be wrong.
Thnx!

Question of the Day?

Hi Rowan for a cheap bailer I used a 2 litre plastic milk container. Screw the top on tightly and cut away the bottom part so you have a high volume scoop with a comfy handle. Nice and flat to get rid of water easily.

After using it the first time I lashed a string around the handle. Only I could loose a bailer over the side!

Question of the Day?

The problem here is, the correct answer assumes you have a bilge pump. However I think I would make sure you are wearing life jackets, then start bailing by whatever means you have plus, notify Coast Guard etc... if you can.

Question of the Day?

I took a stab at that answer , as I had a small boat on the Norfolk Broad's for over 25 years. It wasn't registered with the UK government as such. It was registered with the Broads Authority. I had to pass the Boat Safety scheme (BSS) and get a Boat Safety Certificate (BSC). But that was only introduced over the last 10 or 12 years I think. I cannot actually remember. I know it had to be done every 3 years. It was a bit like a boat's MOT. River Licence was equal to the cars V.E.D. and had to have insurance every year also. But didn't need a boat driving licence, but there were speed limit's 4 mph and they were quite hot on alcohol when driving, but I never saw heard of being breathalyzing anyone in charge of a boat just a caution. Give way to sail and drive on the right side of the river. Sold mine 3 years ago how, HOW I MISS her. She was Norwegian Built for the Fjords, I don think I would have liked to have travelled across them in it, she would have been okay out on the channel though. She was a 21Ft Ancas Sea Queen II. and that was also her name My brother had Sea Queen I. They were built in 1962 and were the first type of boats with outdrives. When the were shown at the Boat Show they were treated as a joke, Who want's a boat with half of an outboard they said. When they were used in races Mercury soon caught on and started to produce their version. The first picture was when she was in moored in Potter Heigham Norfolk, the second picture was when I first got her, that was from March in Cambridgeshire and I towed her from there with my Vauxhall 2.8 TDi Frontera. She needed a hell of a pressure wash, she was filthy.

Question of the Day?

I wasn't going to say anything about todays question but it has been bugging me. How could the Spanish Armada consist of mainly Galleons when out of 141 ships only 21 were Galleons? Plus I don't care what anyone says the algorithm 🤓 that is doing the scoring is not working. On the 6th October I was at 97% and I have got them all correct up until today. It never increased. Now to day I get it wrong it drops to 93% strangely from 96%. I enjoy doing this quiz and I really would like to get back to 100% just for my own satisfaction. 😀
