Question of the Day?

Just got a very nice email from Krick, that kindly stated that Robbe's boat kit numbering system and documentation SUCKED!
It seems Robbe used the same id number from the Topkapi kit on at least two other kits and that the Topkapi version of the manual has become another one of those "modeling mysteries" and is now lost to the sands of time.

You just can't make this crap up. 🙄

Question of the Day?

Hi Xtramaths. It could be declination as variation and declination are the same thing in mapping terms. I got it wrong because I don't think the actual answer is on offer. I wouldn't call the angle between the ships compass direction/course and magnetic north a "magnetic variation" because the angle I would be sailing has to take into account the variation . Not a well worded question again.😁 Plus while replying I just remembered that "Magnetic Deviation" is the affect items in the boat have on the compass reading. Hence they had to be adjusted for each boat when installed.

Same here SS. I used to fix computers when they were delivered in a big lorry with a crane.
There are no halfway measures with a computer, either it works or it doesn't.

Still when it didn't it funded a marriage 2 children and a house and a pension, so can't complain!

Question of the Day?

Hi Roy. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy taking part, I just don't like things that don't work correctly. My engineering background has a lot to do with it.🤣. I will plod on.
#3018

Question of the Day?

Remember it is the taking part that counts not winning. When you get to 100% the only way is down.

I used to organise model boat regattas when some of us were still competitive. Sometimes it would be an Open event. There was this chap who loved taking part never did very well but would come to me to sign a piece of paper to say he was 7th. or where ever he was.
I enquired of one of his friend's what this was all about? He told me that he would buy himself a little cup and have it engraved with, the competition, his name and place. Then it would go on his trophy shelf with all the other cups!

It takes all sorts!

Question of the Day?

Well well well. When I logged in today I was once again at 93% after being at 94% yesterday. When I get an answer correct it goes up by 1%. Get it wrong it drops by 3%. After getting todays question wrong it has certainly dropped 3%.

Hi Jumpugly. I think the Topkapi and the Acapulco shared hull and maybe drive systems. I built an Acapulco, did the build log some time back on this board. If you can’t find what you’re looking for possibly my build could help.

Question of the Day?

Hi simple sailor your problem is 'decimals' the numbers just go on forever! I prefer fractions, where one third is so much easier to express. Percentages are often misunderstood e.g. you cannot 'average' percentages!

I was listening to a breakfast radio broadcast maybe 10 years ago where they had a Cambridge professor on the line. She was asked if she knew whether one third of three quarters was the same as three quarters of one third? She said No!
The mind boggles, its all very well having degrees but common sense seems rather lacking. (Maybe she was still in bed having had a hard night doing the numbers)

The answer is a quarter by the way or a nice 0.25. You can always reverse fractions like this to see if the answer is just sitting there. Does not often happen in decimal notation.

And here's my question of the day...What is the relationship between Krick and Robbe? Did Krick take over Robbe's boat division or purchase their old molds and templates? There seems to be a relationship there. Just curious. Maybe they can help me find an old Robbe manual.
Hmmmmm.🤔

Another anomaly. Yesterday I was at 94% this morning I log in, I am at 93%. I answer the question correctly and it goes to 94%. Is it rounding the 3.3333333 up or down as it feels like it? 🤣 This has happened two days running.

Its the rolling 30 day that is the calculation to attain 100% you need 30 correct answers in succession. Life can be a b****r sometimes! Your errors will last for 29 days and then drop of the end.

9/18 QOD .... I love it when they give me the answer, in the question!
So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

Question of the Day?

Hi Roy,
Re: "... if you want something done, It can only be achieved from the inside, if you leave you are no longer involved."
We don't have to submit to the repetitive nonsense of the QoTD to maybe change something.
As members we can always express our displeasure at something we see 'going off the rails' on the site in the forum section 'Website related', thus remaining involved without wasting time on the (increasingly repeated) questions and ensuing dissections and debates as to why they are wrong and what is correct ... often 'None of the above'.
Even the cock-ups are being repeated - without correcting the mistakes. I'm sure that Stephen does not have the time (or inclination?) to correct the most blatant errors. Who has??

"The QoD was a nice considered addition to the web site and very popular, but not easy to keep the questions flowing. I confess I do not know how to harness A.I. to do the job but it would be a shame to lose it as there is much activity."
There is 'so much activity' precisely because there are so many poorly worded questions with totally ridiculous suggested answers (such as today) and then ... repetitions of the same nonsense.
The real tragedy of this is that it is squeezing out the real 'model boat building' posts and blogs that we are all here really for.☹️ QOTD IS STRANGLING OUR (ONCE LEADING) SITE😭

A daily quiz is simply too ambitious and too much to support.
It's long since time to return to an Annual Christmas Quiz, giving plenty of time to prepare questions. Ai I suppose could be used to generate questions ... but then to be vetted by RI for veracity and sensible answer options.
Today's (and not the first by a long chalk) QoTD had 3 absolutely nonsensical options.
WHAT KIND OF TEST OF MARITIME KNOWLEDGE IS THAT FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE???

Question of the Day?

Just a thought but if you want something done, It can only be achieved from the inside, if you leave you are no longer involved.

I think an American politician said about his enemies that it was better to have them inside the tent p****g out, rather than outside the tent p****g in!
Take you choice.

The QoD was a nice considered addition to the web site and very popular, but not easy to keep the questions flowing. I confess I do not know how to harness A.I. to do the job but it would be a shame to lose it as there is much activity.

I would not ditch the concept, rather, that it needs reviewing.
