John Moses Browning did indeed invent an automatic gun in the 1890s, but about 5 years after Mr Maxim.
His was an improved version using gas pressure to reload, rather than the mechanical spring action of the Maxim gun.
Cheers, Doug 😎
Question of the Day?
So many repeats now, mostly with the same 'dubious' 'correct' answers as the first time.
Always initiating the same debate. Seems like this Quiz has run it's course.
My personal average is 93% but Germany is rapidly sliding down the Chart, and about to drop off, since my colleague joined the fray; currently 70% with 13 wrong answers!☹️ Sabotage!
Ciao All, Doug😎
PS situation reminds me of my first job where I once overheard our finance director commenting ironically to a colleague-
"If things don't improve soon I'll have to ask you to stop helping me!"

There is truly never a dull moment over here! 😉
I think my shock is based mostly in the fact that this sweet old man had pretty much turned into a snarling werewolf in front of me.
As you can imagine emotions run pretty high now. In the end, I don’t mind the extra drive distance for supplies; it’s a much more scenic route anyway. 😉

I watch the election results for USA and everything is so close percentage wise. Both sides have a good size number of people to support them.
About a third of our electorate do not vote so it only needs 35% or so to give a party power to govern.
I do not envy having to vote in USA it is far too divisive etc. I suppose it is best to keep your own council and smile blandly.
These days it is so difficult for all of us to decide what is fact and what is f(r)iction, other countries intervene and elaborate on small truths to create an untruth.
But it does keep the rest of the 'free world' entertained.
Regards, in a non-political way.

Question of the Day?
However, I will blame it on a sad situation that happened to me last Thursday when I walked into one of my favorite old-time hobby shops and stumbled into a political meeting that that was taking place in the back repair section of shop. It was ugly and I was stunned at the vitriol and hate. For some reason the owner, who I like quite a bit, and four of his friends were mouthing off wildly to one another about this, that, and the other. It was a bad look and I started for the door. One of the owners friends made some stupid crack and that's when it got really ugly as I am not one to back down.
I yelled at the owner asking about what the hell was going on in his store, that it was a bad look, and bad for business. They all laughed and I asked one a-hole in particular if he wanted to step outside and sort it out. It almost came to blows. But, the owner interceded and told me it was best that I go.
I think for a second he was embarrassed that I walked in to see him and his like-minded friends together, but to save face he angrily showed me the door...like I was the problem.
I'll never go back. But, the whole situation left an awful taste in my mouth and deeply troubled. Such are some of the problems we have here stateside.
Now I'll have to drive an additional 15 miles for glue and strip wood from now on. Uggh...

Otherwise lost!
GPS is so simple now that virtually all rely on it, even your mobile phone can cope.
Our son's yacht has automatic course control so no need to stand up on the helm, that is when I found out I get sea sick!

Question of the Day?
If only to see how my new 'mit Quizzer' (ich weiß nicht wer!) fares.
Although my personal score is 90%, and has been for several days, since the last disastrous (for me🤔) sailing questions, the Germany score has dropped and dropped to 79% and 9th place.😭 I'm being sabotaged☹️ Never before has Germany recorded 8 wrong answers.
My worst was 5.
For the record I was correct today. OK I had an advantage having worked on many ship COMMS systems over a 40 year span. Including interfacing the Ship's Log to the radio systems.
Mind you, most ships these days rely on GPS to monitor speed and position - and then send the data to the Log recorder, equivalent of the 'Black Box' Flight Data Recorder on aircraft. Even the smallest boat can now be fitted with an inexpensive GPS receiver to do this.
Traditionally the LOG in nautical terms (or Logbook in earlier days) is simply a record of events in the operation of a ship; position, speed, arrivals departures, sightings, collisions, sinkings☹️😭 etc etc.
Cheers All, Doug😎
Question of the Day?
Sorry to be a myth buster BUT ...
Transducer is simply a generic term for a device which changes (Transduces) one form of energy into another, or vice versa. They are useless by themselves, they are the start and end points of a processing system, input and output..
Classic everyday examples known to us all are the microphone and the loudspeaker.
The former changes sound pressure waves into electrical signals, the latter changes them back into audible sound pressure waves, but only after being processed by the amplifier in between which completes the system. As a matter of interest there is yet another 'transduction' before we can 'hear' the reconstructed sound - Our 'lugholes' transduce the sound waves into minute electrical signals which trigger neurons and 'tell' the brain what we have heard🤔
@ DOOGLE; The first example you mention is an Echo Sounder.
An Anemometer is always for measuring wind speed, don't ask me what an 'anemo' is coz I don't know, probably derived from some obscure old Greek word. It works in the same way that the ship's Log works. An impeller revolves according to the speed of the wind or water current striking it. Output can be analogue, a voltage generated by a small motor connected as a generator, or digital derived by counting revolutions using an optical gate generating a pulse train.
The transducer sends electrical signals to an amplifier and display/recording system.
@BOATSHED;, I don't know precisely what you fitted to your boats but there must have been some kind of display unit; voltmeter or screen depending on the type of transducer (analogue/digital) and processing system, inside the boat.
Hope I haven't discombobulated you🤔
Cheers All, Happy transducing, Doug😎

Yet another new word! Cool! I'm learning and learning . . .
Perfect as a landlubber!
When building my stern wheel steamer I need an altimeter rather than a log!
As always, three steps forward, one step back. I think I've set myself a real first-class challenge here. Like this word search . .
🤣🤣🤣🤣
