Hello flaxbybuck,

Very interesting. I am sure that the dolls house looked magnificent when finished. Although my daughter has not asked me, according to my wife she has put in her order for a house 😁.

The Pleasure of Building Models

Hi Greg
I noted your interest in possibly getting a dolls house kit. This took me back nearly 30 years when I made a dolls house/model of the house we lived in. We didn't have much money then, so I carefully planned the house so it could be built from a single sheet of ply. The result had me building to a scale of 1/18 and I started by making 1/18 scale rules ! The finished house was fine, but our daughter never took to playing with dolls, so it never really got played with. But there ......... it kept me off street corners for months.

Hello Colin,

My granddaughter Mia's mother used to play with Sylvanians. As I remember she had just about all you could get from the range.

As I said, I have seen some nice kits. If I get one I can build it along with all my other projects so by the time I have finished Mia will be 16 and not want it 😁.

I'm also supposed to be building two Dovecots for both of my daughters gardens 🙄.

I have never had so much to do. I think I will return to work. It was nowhere near as busy 😊.

Greg, I think that's a wonderful idea. My granddaughter is 4 and plays for hours making up little stories with the models.
We started her off with Sylvanian families houses and figures they are good quality and mostly easy to clean.
Cheers Colin.

Hello Colin,

Your dolls house and layout are amazing. I am considering building a dolls house for our new granddaughter who is just a few months old. I have seen online some kits that look interesting.

A few shots from Caroline,s ongoing project which she started in 2010, Staircases to finish and a formal garden on a pull out shelf in base unit, all electrics are controlled from a bank of DIP switches on a fly lead.
All food on plates also the veg garden plants are made from FIMO clay. All items in garden hand made from wood and metal in 1/12th scale.
Thought you might find this interesting.
Cheers Colin.

JohnF,
I took a quick look, and I do see several Mamod burner trays on his site.
I will need to contact him to select the correct one.
Thank You for the info!!!

So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

What is it about Trains?
I remember when I used to commute to NYC when it was somewhat civilized. I would stand close to the edge of the platform, just so I could feel the Throb of the diesels as they came in😍😍
Sorry for my digression Stephen, I will try to stay on track in the future.🙄🙄

A few shots of my 8x4 layout, rolling stock and locos all pre 1985, mostly 1960's Triang. buildings mostly card but a few airfix kit built. Layout resides in my garage propped up against the wall until its needed for the kids (that's my excuse.)
Building and trackside accessories kept indoors on a shelf in spare bedroom. all rolling stock crated in the attic.
wifes vintage model car and truck collection also in attic, her mamods live in the garage with some of my boats.

I am pretty sure that a Mamod style fuel tray may be found at Tony Green Steam Models of Lincoln. Tel 01522 681989 website www.tgsm.co.uk.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dave,
If you can't find one on ebay you could bend up a little sheet metal for the tray.
should be 1/2 up on the sides , 3/4 wide on the bottom, 2 1/2 long.
measurments are out to out. Esbit fuel pellets are available on ebay. Mamod pellets are way to expensive if you can find them.
Here is a pic of my Mamod Steam Car I purchased on ebay.
Hope that helps

I have been watching eBay, but have seen nothing yet.
If somebody could post good pics of the fuel tray, I could likely find somebody to fabricate one.

Dave B, that's a nice marine Mamod, I think Originally would have solid fuel blocks in a tray.
We've only got spirit burners in ours.
We have bought replacements from ebay in the past.
You could even try a small gas burner.
I'll try and post some photos of the Mamod display tomorrow, and possibly the railway layout.

I recently picked up a Mamod steam engine, but it is missing the fuel tray. You wouldn't know where I might find one?

Luck duck. Nice layout and a great excuse. We also have a lot of scalextric from the late 60's early 70's, an 8' x 6' 00 guage layout, along with vintage meccano from ealy 50's, my wife has 1/12th scale dolls houses and Mamod steam engines.
I love when the grandchildren come to stay in the school holidays as I get to play again without getting into trouble. And the smile says it all.
Enjoy while you can I say, cheers Colin.

Hi PeterB4, living near that model shop in Ford West Sussex can be extremely expensive, as not only do I build model boats, with supplies from another store in West Sussex, but I am also into model trains in both OO gauge, HO in the US, and N gauge, and also have a Scalextric set built up over many years. Attached photos show part of the N gauge, which is about 4 feet long by 15 inches. Fully digital, with sounds, and set lighting and carriage lighting!! My excuse is that the grandchildren love playing with all the toys.

Amazing detail. Very impressive. I haven't done any model railroading since my kids were young, but I did stop by a large model railroad and Scalextric shop in Ford, West Sussex last year when I was over for a visit. It seems like quite an expensive hobby now.

Hello Rick,

I intend to keep building until I'm carried out in a box 😁. Perhaps I could make that as well!

The only problem I have with all these ongoing projects is that I will never have the time to go sailing or flying. Oh, I forgot to say that I like going fishing as well 🙄.

Thank you to everyone who have commented on my post. It is really interesting to read that other members either appreciate the layout or have an interest in model railways.

I have another layout in the same size that I started about two years ago which got put on the back burner when my Arthritis decided to become worse. The theme of that layout is a canal scene with a lock and industrial active in the making of pottery and the manufacture of bricks. The time period is the early 1900s set in an area of industrial England.

Having now written about the completed layout and had such kind comments I am now spurred on to continue building the canal scene layout. So I'm going to give up sleeping and work 24/7 on building all the models I have in the way of RC boats, RC aircraft, Static display ships and model railways. A while back one of my daughters gave some Airfix kits as a birthday present so I have them to build as well. If you don't ever hear from me again it's because I'm too busy building! 🙄

Hi FF I should have said very nice layout. I noted another post where a visit to Dortmund was mentioned, I have been a few times. Some of the exhibitors get a chance to do combination layouts one especially I remember was RC warship and attendant RC tugs (about 6 inches long) and a HO railway layout all working. It was 2 deep with visitors the whole time. My son was with me and as he speaks German we had an interesting conversation, my little German has died through non use.
I think many of us have other interests I belong to the West London Meccano society as well, not a builder any more but love the engineering that goes into many models now.

I started the actual modelling with the 2 shilling rubber driven kits from Keil Craft and was it Skyleader? Must have made up and crashed half of all their models, then came the Jetex50's.
Then larger gliders but after 4 years I looked back at all my tangled bits of balsa and started on model boats. I think Chiquita was my first then Bustler then Carribbean Coaster with unsuitale RC. Then the RAF it goes on but would'nt change it for the world.

Roy

Hi Firefighter, I am an OO gauge GWR fan among my more than several jobs to do is a re-build of my shelf layout in my shed (8X12 feet). The original was just an end to end but soon proved not enough and a few years ago more shelving was put in to go around the shed. Various small things stopped progress but I hope to be runing this year. I like the Branch lines and short trains etc.
I stick to 'cab' control although where I am now visiting in Australia my son has a large model railway using DCC and I can operate that. He likes the long express trains, we timed one at full speed and it took 65 seconds to get around the track.
I go back full of enthusiasm for it then something needs repair etc at home and ..... It goes on!

I have 2 model boats to work on a woodkit from Sarik of a small yacht Wild Duck and I bought an unstarted Panart Bruma kit a month or so ago.
This retirement can be hard work!

Im with you Firefighter the enjoyment and satisfaction l feel while building almost anything, be it a boat aircraft or even a brick wall, using your brain to get round large or small problems keeps your juices flowing.
Then if somebody else comes along and complements you for doing a fine piece of work and you can share your skills with others l find that quite humbling.
stay safe out there chaps, Jim

Very Nice Layout Greg.
Thanks for Sharing👍👍
I would have gone with N gage, but years ago i started with HO.
I had a set up but my x wife made me dismantle it. (She's now long gone😁😁😁)
Just recently I have started to rebuild it at face Hight, top of windows and under bookcase, around the perimeter of the room, with my office in the middle, 20' X 12'.
Finally, was able to get my collection out of the closet!
Reason being i don't have the space for a proper layout.
I do love trains
I like to hear the DCC steam engines at idle as I am working on my computer.

Wonderful layout.Until recently I to had an N-scale layout so I know the joy you have not only in the build but also in the running of the layout. For thous not knowing much of model railroads. For me N-scale was the best decision as you can build so much more in a small area.👍👍👍👍👍Keep building .

The Pleasure of Building Models

I have always been a practical person which served me well in my employment but it was not until later life I found the fascination and enjoyment in all types of models. After retiring from the online business I set up after leaving the fire service I first started modelling model railways in N gauge which for those of you who perhaps don't know is the a popular small gauge.

When it comes to layouts there many and various. There are the continuous loop layout like we had as children. The massive and complicated layouts which take years to build. One famous person who comes to mind is Rod Stewart who is a great fan of model railways and has a huge layout at his home. Other layouts are the micro layouts with the challenge of putting a model railway in something that is unusual like a briefcase for example. And there is the end to end layout that runs trains and rolling stock from one end to the other. This style of layout can be displayed in a reasonably small area. Some of these layouts are called shelf layouts and are exactly that. They are built on a shelf which then can be fixed to a wall. The latter is my preferred way of build.

A couple of years ago I built a shelf layout which took me about one year. The layout measures four feet long by one foot deep. The theme of the layout is based on a port somewhere on the south Coast of England which is preparing for the invasion of Europe on the 6th June 1944 known as Operation Overlord or D Day. The layout shows the busy preparations for the invasion which I researched prior to starting the model.

Some of the pieces for the layout were purchased off the shelf but many were 3D printed to my requirements. Having planned the layout and gathered all the components apart some off the shelf railway items I hand painted everything including the figures. All the buildings are made from card.

I have written this post because at the moment I am not able to use one of my hands to continue building my boats so I though I would share my layout with you mainly to say that building any model be it a model boat, a model aircraft or a model railway layout there so much pleasure in the achievement.

I hope you like the photographs.
