A friend came over for Thanksgiving week. Got my boats out for some fun. He controlled the shrimp boat and I the grey torpedo boat.

Issac, not really major damage, but bad enough. In the 52 years since I built my home I never experienced anything like this.
If the water level was about 1 inch lower we would have lost the flooring in only one room not 7. Fortunately 5 other rooms are OK.

That sucks. You had some major damage at your place. Hopefully it is cleaned up before the mold gets it.

When Ian struck, my wife went to Target a few days later and they were drying the place with those big fans. She got mold poisoning just from walking in the store. She ended up in the hospital later.

Florida is not a fun place during hurricane season.

My damage was some roof tiles missing, lanai screen damaged and my RV canvas covering was shredded.

And, there is always next year to screw it up for us.

Good to hear that. However, I'm still emptying the rooms that has ruined floors. Currently trying to cut down my huge model building "lab" so I move it. Looks like I will need to replace almost 2000 square feet of flooring on the main level.

Hurricane season is coming to an end here in Florida.

I was lucky this time with minor damage. Other folks were hit hard.

I’m back running my boats again

This weekend will be an extremely sad one!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
We finish the season with last competition for electro driven boats.
There will be a lot of wet handkerchiefs on sunday. Our eyes wil burn with the amount of salt tears. Why is a season so short ?!?!?!

Some sad sights there and a lot of $$$$ to put things back to "normal". I hope the residents have the tenacity and will to get back to how things were. Positive thoughts for all concerned.

"Looks like those boats haven't been used for a while, or maintained with all those barnacles on the bottoms?"

You are correct. I was surprised as well.

It is possible, that the owner just did not care or neglected those boats for years as barnacles were attached to the props.

However, there were other beached boats with clean bottoms.

Damage photos I took.
Hurricane Milton October 2022 hits Florida.

Boats, planes, homes....

Some homes along the beach are full of sand ( 8 ft of sand ).

Wow, a fire during a storm. That is bad. Obviously the fire was severe ( electrical fire??????).

Like anything, disasters come in many shapes.

I hope they escaped and are really OK.

In our area the use corregated aluminum panels that are pretty thick. Checkout the photo of the house a few houses away that caught fire during the middle of the hurricane. Emergency services were suspended so they could not respond. Had to burn itself out plus the rain. Checkout the melted aluminum panels on the windows and the car in the garage. Good sense of humor via the sign. That's what we are doing.

"Isaac, is that corrugated sheet metal over your windows?? In the mid-90s i was in Cape Cod & they were nailing 4x8 sheets of plywood over the windows of the Kennedy Compound"

Yes, those are corrugated sheet metal panels that bolt onto the exterior of doors and windows.

All new construction houses here have those as a minimum. My home is 4 years old. No need for plywood anymore unless you have an older home.

it takes me approximately 30 minutes to put 8 ports up. I do need a ladder for the top screws.

Pictures attached that show the simple system.

For $30,000 you can buy hurricane proof clear windows that need nothing. 😁

That sucks. I hope damage is manageable. Did you manage to dry it?
Careful of mold. It’s toxic. My wife got extremely sick due to mold at Target right after hurricane Ian.

Here is the eye of the hurricane passing over my home. As you can see the heavy rain is north of the eye. That’s what caused the heavy rains at your place. Poor drainage in Florida is common.

That's pretty wild, the eye of Milton. Our house held but most of it flooded. Not because of the gulf and bay water (which actually dropped in our area) but the rain run off system is not sufficient to handle this much rain. Going to cost us a bunch of $$$ and time. Lew

Edit: No electric until next week. X-rays show no broken bones but still in pain.

Hurricane Milton destroyed much of the west Florida coastal communities. We stayed at our home while the eye of the storm was over us with sustained winds of 102 mph and more. Our home made it OK with some roof tiles missing and other small issues. But no flooding even though we are close to a big river. Lucky. Other folks have their entire homes and communities destroyed.

There are no basements in Florida. We are at sea level and ground water is only a foot or so below the surface.

Florida is in the initial stages of being “Water World”.

I fear we will be hit big time. The entire west coast of Florida will get it to various degrees.

We shuttered our home and staying. It is too late to evacuate. I-75 is already a parking lot.

We will do our best to ride it out.

We were lucky this time. Glad to hear you are OK. Friends close to the water's edge got flooded here. Many business that we frequented in Venice and up to Sarasota were flooded big time and some were swept away. Even though the winds were in the 60-70 mph range max, it was the water surge that wacked the coast.

Here is a short video of a park we go to with the sole restaurant destroyed.

Good news Isaac... nice to hear you are safe. We also made it thru OK (no house damage) however lots of branches down including one big limb. Went outside in the midst of it as it was just west of us. As Florida's west coast moves further west as you go north and the hurricane's path was a little east of north we were actually closer to the center. Probably saw winds about 75mph. Was hard to stand in the driveway.

I have been here over 60 years and this was probably the worst one yet for me. This thing developed fast and moved fast. This 'cane defined the meaning of "Blow me Over".

Made it OK

The hurricane passed us with no damage. Just high winds as much as 60 mph.

The eye if the storm was far enough away.

Folks up north and along the waterfront got flooded.

My boats are all safe and back on their stands.

Just watched an episdode of air crash investigations. This was not a crash but a large aircraft involved in collecting data in hurricanes. They chose by chance a category 5 with its own set of micro whirlwinds going even faster and nearly lost the aircraft!

I got shaken up at the very rear of an A380 returning from Australia and that was bad enough for me. It was the tail end of one over Viet Nam earlier this year. No one hurt but quite frightening at the time.

Is battening down the hatches a regular expectation? Also did you choose to live in such an area in the first place?

all the best
