Please bring this forum to a close now, the original issue has been resolved and spelling/grammar wasn't the issue. The site has people with varying skills and that includes the both practical skills and writing skills but we should all try to to be positive with our comments irrespective of the ability of the the person sharing there experience with us.
Many thanks fellow modelers

I agree with Peter,
Some of us did not get the education that others had due to factors beyond our control so as long as i can understand what a person is trying to say then that is ok.
It is the same as skills.
Some people are more skilful than others but we admire the fact that they try and we know that they will become more skilled as they go along.

I totally agree with the comments regarding unnecessary language but I draw the line at spelling and Grammar. I always understand what the author is trying to say and that, in my opinion, is more than good enough. Their is probably two much emphasis on grammer at times and I, four one, have no issues with it.

I have been following this thread with great interest, but have refrained from joining in till now.For many years I was on the committee of a model-aircraft club with many members that had an amazing level of skill but almost no social abilities whatsoeverl. Likewise a study of internet blogs will soon show that many technically able people are almost illiterate. The spelling on this site on occasions leaves a lot to be desired. The increasing use of expletives is universal but that is no reason for toleration. Personally I can swear with the best (fifty five years in the building trade), but I don't want it on here so if you can't write two words without one of them starting with 'F...' then take your foul mouth and bigoted opinions somewhere else. Thats it moan over. To end with would some contributors please learn the difference between to, too and two also their and there etc or am I being too pedantic or perhaps just an increasingly intolerant seventy six year old.

Doug Many thanks for your support on this, I know my grandson will come across this type of thing but placing it in front of him in this forum isn't right.
I also got similar support from other members by private message.
PS In support of "electrickery/tronics" I think its an integral part of the development of the hobby making it much more interesting, I just wish I understood it🤔but I'm learning.

We are not all going to think that one modeler's build is what we would build but we all should look at the work that went into the build and respect that regardless of how the model turns out we all know that a lot of work and hours went into building the model.

Absolutely no reason for you to apologise for anything Nerys.
Sorry if I gave you that impression.😔
I did mention that whereas your main interest is with the variety of commercial sailing vessels you served on you are not fixated on them.
On the other hand I'm sure you are not in agreement with Westquay's somewhat insular views.

Sorry to hear of your other troubles. You had me going with 'fistula' for a few minutes!
Hope it gets sorted soon🤞

Looking forward to the 🐛 list Doug.

I find it oddly fascinating how people interact online. In real life it’s a little easier as you can gauge how things are meant by visual cues, facial expressions etc.

Naively I don’t think anyone really means to belittle others. Like in real life you get personalities which are a bit more overbearing than others. Personally I brush off big headed comments. Generally why I’m not a fan of social media. That whole business model is built around people sharing how great their own lives are compared to other people.

Let’s not let this website become that. There’s no right or wrong in anything. It’s the community spirit and sharing ideas that’s important 😊

Hi Guys,
I was tempted to jump in earlier on this thread.
There are other ways of explaining your feelings without upsetting the other members.
altho sometimes difficult to put into words a little thought before typing is all that is needed.

Like most of the members on this site i really admire the skills and talents of the other model makers, no matter what the subject they are modelling.

I have made a lot of models in my time from Cars,Trucks,Tanks Gliders, Aeroplanes And of course Boats, And a few strange creations.

A lot of skills from other hobbies also transfer over to the model boat builders hobby such as painting and weathering from the model train layouts for one.

There are so many skilled and talented people that we all can learn something from no matter what hobby or job they do.

Anyway that is enough of me waffling on.
I do hope that when reading this thread that you don’t get your Martin’s mixed up. LOL!!!

Sorry Doug, if I came across too much as if I was only interested in inshore sailing craft, they are my greatest interest but, my passion is for the sea and ships, I have an interest in all sorts of craft from the smallest dinghy to the biggest cruise liner, though I might be critical of the looks of some of those and what I dislike even more, the slab sided car carriers. You need only look at my harbour to realise I have a diverse interest and in actual fact have a couple of boats such as a Naval tug, which as it is not quite ready for the water, I have not added to the harbour yet. In normal times, I love visiting harbours and docks, just to look at whatever type of vessel is there, I like looking at and am interested in any type of boat and when it comes to models can only marvel at some of the wonderful workmanship so often demonstrated by fellow modelmakers, wishing that my arthritic fingers would let me emulate them.

All the best, Nerys

Totally agree Doug, like all styles of moosic, but RAP!
don't think that comes under the music banner.
Being a muso for the most of my working life, Iv'e
played it all, even classical guitar, but have never knocked other styles.
PS; "NO! not that Doug, " NOW you've piqued my curiosity!!!!"

I just like building and sailing boats... I will try anything once! NO! not that Doug, but most modellers in their time will build/sail a tug, warship, yacht etc, but we all should have an open mind, but keep our mouths shut on others interests, a bit like music, I like R & R, but I also like classical music, we have our own choices, but it's nicer to make kind comments on others choices.

Hi Nerys,
" I'm in full agreement with you, the inshore sailing craft are of immense interest and it is a great pity more people do not model them."
I'm sure you are not in full agreement with ALL of Martin's views.
'Even' you venture into other boating realms once in a while!😉

I fully understand your main interest in inshore sailing craft as you have worked on them for many years, including as skipper. My respect👍 And I greatly admire your thus acquired knowledge of them and your skills for reproducing them in miniature. Indisputable!
BUT; You don't belittle other folks who have an abiding interest in other genres, such as tugs, coasters or warships etc, which they, or relatives, may have served on or simply worked on, like me on naval ships around the world. Or Ed (Figtree) on his tugs. To name but two of us here. True model boat enthusiasts can admire the skills of others, even if his/her choice of subject may not be ours.

Most of us don't wander too far from our comfort zones but, unlike Martin, we don't get belligerent and rude about those that don't share ours or the results of their labours.

It's the variety of interests and skills of the folks on this site which makes it LIVE and very likely sparks in some members an interest in ships and boats of a type that they never before knew existed.

Sadly I could see this coming with Martin. It followed the same pattern as last time, just much quicker this time.
Enough soap boxing!
Stay safe you two,🤞

Hi Stephen,
"What is this mayhem website you mention?"
I've looked in there once in while, usually when led there by Google while looking for something.🙄
A curious format and few of the threads seem to last long or reach any conclusion, just sorta peter out🤔 Real build blogs (like here) are few and far between and often the photos are inaccessible ☹️

Colin Milbourn has beefed up up the Model Boat Mag forum somewhat, but graphically still in the stone age and not a patch on your platform👍👍👍 .
Looking at the articles archived on the Mag site is often far more useful than the forum, although the photo management there is also irritating.
Keep up your good work😊

That's more or less what I expected to happen.
History repeats itself.
I can back up from archives everything I wrote, except about the FB group (whatever that was), never heard of that before.
Having seen some photos of his creations I have no doubt at all that Martin is a superb model builder.
However, he has his personal interests and 'anything else is nowhere, rubbish'.
Which is also OK, if only he wouldn't express his views so vehemently with a denigrating attitude to folks with other interests.
I believe I proved with my Sea Scout restoration that even a 'warship lover' like me can produce a 'superb finish' on wood. Patience is the secret😉

Don't worry Mike, you won't need to.
If Fireboat doesn't then I will. I've already discretely modified some of Martin's (Westquay) posts.
We've been round this loop with Martin already, a couple of years ago, and he disappeared for a year or so, after several posts in a similar vein. Not for the first time I believe. So this is the Martin we know and love🙄
As far as I know he has been dumped by Mayhem before, several years ago. He then came over (back?) to us then left after a year or so after a run-in with a previous administrator.
So I'm not surprised he's having problems with Mayhem now.
Could also be 'finger trouble' though. He's a Luddite!

He is/was a professional model maker with a personal penchant for 'woodies'.
To him anything else is just rubbish. Tolerance for other peoples interests and skills - Zero.
Except perhaps for those of us here (such as Graham93 and myself amongst others) who have some command over 'electrickery' as he calls electrics/electronics!
He lived on a yacht for some years, albeit an immobile one with no rudder or tiller.
He's been building a model of it (Vanity) for donkey's years.

If he started his FB (?) group in his usual tone I'm not surprised he attracted no contributors.
Each to his own! As he said himself 'He'll do it his way' anyway.
(Is that Frankie I hear applauding?)😉
I'll probably get some flak for this post, but I've got broad shoulders.
Cheers, Doug 😎

Westquay, I'm in full agreement with you, the inshore sailing craft are of immense interest and it is a great pity more people do not model them. The nearest we get with a group are the builders of model Thames Barges but there are so many more interesting craft. I note from Dave Watts Mastman's latest catalogue is that he is now producing a hull for a Thames Bawley and that might well be my next project when my current builds, a swim head stumpy barge and a Dutch Schouw are finished. Soft spot for Bawleys, when I was a teenager, I often spent a weekend on one, a Medway Bawley called Jenken. I suppose one of the problems with small inshore craft is that they are mainly open boats and one has to hide the RC gear somewhere but I'm sure a bit of ingenuity will get round this. So, let's beat the drum for the multitude of traditional inshore craft that used to be seen around our coasts.

Cheers, Nerys

I think model boats magazine forum still exists, but that was always very stuffy.
No, I'll stick with this and Modelshipworld, although since they had a big crash even that august place seems somehow emasculated. Too much non marine stuff. Airfix aeroplanes and that sort of thing.
I did try to start a FB group for my kind of speedboats, but nobody ever contributed, so I dumped it.

Roy,
I'll try to log in once more, but as there's no way to contact them I shall just do what I always end up doing with forums, leave! (Expletive deleted😎) I always end up doing it my way anyway, I just like to help people save time and money if I can and help them enjoy the hobby more.
But, in answer to your question, I cannot get interested in warships of any era whatever and tugs, coasters, liners. You could say ships generally. Just too big and Nelson's stick and string collection drives me nuts. Too much to know.
My interests are the inshore sailing craft of Gt. Britain and Ireland and mahogany classic speedboats. I think people are scared of the latter because a superb finish is essential. And if you can't work metal, forget it. That is as essential. I love both and can do both. I just wanted to and practiced. Pretty obvious really! The former? What's not to love? Variety, localness, almost all are beautiful, static or working models, small enough to build biggish and still transport, so nice detail. Yet you rarely see a Thames Bawley, a Galway Hooker or a Northumberland Coble. A Shetland Sixareen Or a Leigh Peter Boat. Even the names are redolent of the sea. I was hooked by reading Edgar March's two volumes on the topic. But I can never find anything. I suppose because in the recent times, where there's a less and less likely chance someone has actually scratchbuilt anything, they select a damned warship, not a far more interesting and developed local craft. It never seems to occur to them that they might actually finish something smaller! And they can do a small collection where every model is very different from the next, whereas Nelson Stick and stringery all looks very similar, ugly even!

Hi all, I tried getting back on Model Boat Mayhem after a long absence. Not because I don't like it here, but because they have a bit more activity on the kind of boats I like, but although I've signed in and updated my password and it calls me by my user name, I can't leave replies. Has anyone else had this problem or have I been banned? Wouldn't surprise me, but I can't remember such things. I don't want to join RCGroups as it's too American, even though they do like their mahogany Hotrods. But nobody seems to do vintage yachts and inshore craft. And I ONLY do those categories.
