Brian Clewes brought along a nice example of his scratch built Master Hand retired fishing boat, for a sail. When larger more powerful mechanised boats were introduced this type was abandoned. Many were rescued and turned into pleasure / racing type craft and that is what this model depicts. Not seen for some years but is ageing well. The static pics will be of interest to any modeller considering making a scale sailing ship of this type. I did film some video and will share this later when edited.
    enjoy

Nice calm night last night, so thought I'd go down an disturb the peace. Camera battery must have been going flat as the sound/picture sync was miles out, but you'll get the idea, (the sound is ahead of the picture by about 4 seconds) Might try for a better one when it's lighter and the battery is fully charged. YT also distorts a good video in the transfer for some reason (my HD camera anyhow)

Hi Rick, it's actually a tidal estuary (Orewa River) which doesn't look as good when the mud's in๐Ÿ˜ (arrow is where I was for perspective). Get some good pics of sunsets from there at times. There's a walk/cycleway round the entire estuary which is pretty nice. Star is my place, so quite handy for boating. I was running the airboat from beside the boat ramp.

Wasn't a bad day today after a week of rain and storms (the 4ft sand bank was almost level with the creek before the storm, creek's moved 30ft sideways, - normally tidal right up under the bridge) so I took the airboat out for a thrash. Bit hard going up the creek with all the rocks exposed and shallow spots,- stopped a number of times. Lot of fun but not a lot of room to manoeuvre. I'm going to do it again on a calm day when the tide's in, and go out to sea a bit.

    HI All,

Just calling in to say that I have not finished this little model yet, large due to Christmas and the like. However, I am now back on it and it should not take long now. During the down time on it, I have decided not mount it on a stand but to make a boat trailor for it and have acquired a suitably-sized RangeRover, R/C to launch it into the lake from our slipway. Also, I have decided to use a gearbox, one motor, two screws as space and weight were both getting tight. So it will be fitted with two motors direct drive.

Hi Phil, been wanting to do that for a few years, but haven't found a cheap enough set yet. I've struggled with trying to position one boat with a camera, behind or beside the subject etc, while trying to drive 2 boats at once. One thing I was thinking of, was to put the camera on a 360Deg gimbal so you can rotate it and follow something, rather than have to constantly re-position the whole camera boat to keep the subject in frame.

This is s short video of the first trial of the Police Launch. I was very happy with the performance. After 30 minutes of running in fairly rough conditions, I was pleased to note that not even a drip of water entered the hull.
She performed very well but I will wait for a calmer day before deciding on any changes needed to the ballast.
I stopped the run after 30 minutes only because it was very cold. The LiPo battery, 2 cell 2200 mAh, performed faultlessly. Even after being in storage charge for more that 2 years, it still was only reading 3.78 volts per cell after the 30 minutes. My estimate is that it will run for 40 minutes or more before getting close to the lower limit. I was running at full speed for most of the test. My only negative from the test is that Krick have settled for a motor which is at the bottom of the power range. A pity as I am sure that an increase in motor speed would be of benefit to the model.

Sun was out, wind was down, so took the boat for swimming lessons. Went very well, no problems other than the silicone couplings trying to screw themselves off as usual, (too much bite and torque) and bunching up to the motor causing friction), (have a possible fix I'm working on for that today) Heaps of power from the 2 - 540 HV brushed motors only running on 3s. Never went much more than a tad past 1/2 throttle which was spot on scale wise.

Very quiet as well, - mind you, couldn't hear much anyhow with a road milling machine working at the end of the pond about 150m away, at around 80db where I was!!๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ญ Of course it would have to be there today,! something like this always stuffs my plans up, cars, trucks, screeching seagulls, people talking to you while you are trying to make a nice quiet video etc etc. Can't seem to get away from noise. Added to that, the video's crap,- as soon as it uploads to YT it turns to rubbish,- was quite acceptable till then.

Must be the wide format they use, as it's fine in a small screen (ie YT preview) and my computer. Worst thing is, it took an hour to load this rubbish on a fibre connection!! Not loading any more till I get a better camera, "Santa, did you hear that ?"๐Ÿ˜

I might de-power it a bit, as it has too much power really,- might put 2 540 45T motors in which will run on 2s nicely with 30mm props (has 35s at the moment) and not be as touchy on the throttle. You can steer this just using the throttles it's so bitey. Spins on the spot like a jet boat as well. Stereo worked well, but the IR remote doesn't like working too far away in bright sunlight, (have a separate vid, but YT would give a copyright warning, so I won't put that up) The vid is garbage, but you'll get the idea๐Ÿ˜

Hi Peter, doubling the size of it doesn't seem to have done it any harm ! -have to fix the couplings before trying more 'steam'. Imagine almost doubling that speed, might be a bit uncontrollable or do something weird like a nose in barrel roll.๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ like that big twin Packard powered Swedish vintage repro- Sverige S1.

Found it would fit in the paddling pool, so being a nice sunny day, thought it was about time to wet its' bum. So bright today, smoke and water was hard to see, (I can't win ! - either too bright or too dull๐Ÿ˜) Anyhow, everything works well, (just need to adjust the rudders,- bit of right needed), plenty of grunt (only about 1/2 throttle max here,- mostly just 1 motor - don't want to bash the paint off !)- bit hard to control in a small tub !,- needed someone to hold it.

Next stop, the lake !, after I modify the launching trolley and making a stand. Unfortunately can't demo the stereo working due to new YT music censoring rubbish. No different to sitting at the beach with a radio, but YT warns you about copyright which is just moronic.

Hi Peter, wasn't room for a heck of a lot of testing really, and nowhere to tie anything to that wouldn't have damaged something. The music is a problem because of the algorithm YT uses. seems to pick up the most obscure music (even old rare 70s stuff) and starts warning you about copyright . Don't know how it does it, but I've even tried Cuban music, and it still picks it up (mind you who's going to have a go at you from Cuba๐Ÿ˜) The bit of rubbish stuff I made on a free beat site got past it though,- strange ??

Even if you play the music,- (obviously in the model vid) it will still pick it up,- and if someone is parked next to you in a car with the stereo going and you are recording something else!! This is just beyond stupid, as you are using it for private purposes and not being paid for doing it. Seems like the whole world is - 'cant play this, can't record this, can't video this, can't have kids playing on swings, might hurt themselves, can't make noise' etc etc. The govt can record people without them knowing, but you can't !!! All about control. I'll do a vid on the water with music - "I was just videoing someones' boat sir" and see what happens.

Hi Bill, wasn't game to try that, kept trying to bash itself to bits. Hopefully be out to the pond soon, just sorting the launching trolley out. Restrictions make waiting for things (sponge tubing in this case) a pain, slows every simple 5min job down to days.๐Ÿ˜

Should have tethered it JB - soft sling tether with fishermans scale in between - gives you the thrust measurement - mind you watching it run it would probably have emptied the test tank quickly at full throttle - so not such a good idea after all.

In any case it was good to finally see it on the water - as you say pity about the sound . Could you download some of your CDs onto your PC and use those ? - after all you paid for them.

There are also pay sites you can download music from - not very expensive - not sure you would have the sound police at your sailing water either ????????????

Final trials for my Gaff Rigged Bristol Pilot Cutter , started life as a static display model which I adapted for " Radio Control " . She is seen here on trial checking balance / trim /steering and simple sail control.
Certainly no claims here on scale or workmanship ! - just a " fun and functional " model which more than satisfies my initial challenge ! .

View from on board my Cutter sailing on the Pavilion Gardens lake in Buxton last weekend.
The video is running slow at 70% speed as I think it looks better at that speed.

It'll come right Graham, practice makes perfect๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™„ That's a nice pic by the way, quite frameable if enlarged๐Ÿ‘

    Hi JB,

I can't use the lack of a wind indicator as an excuse ๐Ÿค”. I still think the main problem is the nut holding the tiller ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚

A little wind indicator on the top of your mast might help a bit Graham. You could knock up a small version of one of these. I use the black arrow type, on the 100% boats (I've painted the tail and point on mine dayglo orange.) Very useful. I can scan and pic my Graupner Optimist one for an example to copy if you like, should be about the right size, (similar design to the coloured ones).

    Hi JB,

Thanks,I agree. It is better to sheet in when gibing. Trouble is I donโ€™t always realise itโ€™s about to happen ๐Ÿค—. Whilst I can build sailboats, Iโ€™m still a novice learning how to sail them.๐Ÿค”

Looks good at that speed Graham, shame you can't get it out on the sea to get rid of the background, - would almost look 100% scale. When you gybe, try sheeting in as you are going into the gybe and releasing slowly on the other side. This should stop the boom slamming over and reducing the scale look

Ever felt sorry for those Philipino static models you see all over the place? Well I did and bought this launch from a charity shop in Didcot for a fiver. I reckoned that the fittings were worth that even if the change to working model failed. Fortunately, the model floated about right as it was and I managed to save a lot of weight to allow for the added weight of motor/batteries/ rc gear etc.

The project has not been without its problems but it should be finished and ready to maiden within a couple of weeks. Not sure that I would do this again but it has been interesting......... I intend to mount it on a boat trailer rather than a stand. Report more when she is launched.
