27 posts · Page 2 of 3Its powered by two MFA Torpedo 800 electric motors. power comes from two lead acid batteries, each rated at 12v 7Ah. Control is provided by two Mtroniks Tio ESC. The twin spade rudders are linked to one servo. Each ESC has its own receiver. I found that one receiver, using a Y lead, could not continuesly keep the two ESC supplied with a signal and they kept going into Failsafe mode alternately. I got round it by binding two receivers to the one transmitter. Within the engine compartment is an automatic bilge pump. Two probes detect if/when the water level rises to a certain amount in the bilge and activates the pump.
The model has working radar scanner , navigation lights, search light and blue flashing light.

- Colin TAble SeamanI've not done a blog either. I have the RNLI drawings but as you know you only get the starboard side in detail. Also they cut everything off above the wheelhouse roof so no detail regarding radar or aerials.I've not done a blog either. And an MFA Spearfish still untouched in the box. I used to have a Spearfish with a Irvine 61 in and run great. Used it for many years on both Blackheath pond and Clapham Common long pond. Finally had to bin it 😭 after about 20 years due to quite a few run ins with the concrete pond sides 😯 . Still have the engine. But will hopefully put a brushless in the new one.

I'm running my Avenger on the Thumper type outrunner motor with a 45mm X prop (only because it was on from other motor useage). What's anyone else using on the thumper. Just put a 50X on, but the pond's frozen 😭 so haven't tested it. 😟MFA Avenger / Spearfish. - wombatjamesLeading SeamanPly parts are router cut, as you see them in the build photos. Only the hull formers are balsa and you cut them out with a craft knife. 3mm balsa. Hull skins are 0.8mm ply and deck and cabin is 1.5mm ply. Gun bits and torpedos are provided as plain dowels so you have to do a little bit of scratch finishing. Comes with a very basic motor about 200 size and a simple tube, prop shaft and prop. For a little boat it has a lot going for it. Didnt glass hull, used ordinary PVA, sanding sealer, spray car high build primer, spray grey primer and gloss.Ply parts are router cut, as you see them in the build photos. - ads90Warrant OfficerHI DaveHI Dave Yes, my ESC is a Tornado 50 Amp which is the same as my friend's one - in fact I bought it on his recommendation, however I usually use Mtroniks. Our motors are not the same but both have similar RPM at 12 volt. I have ordered 3 more props of varying sizes and pitch to see how it will perform - had I have seen my friend down the lake in the last few months since I have been building my Perkasa, I might have got the prop right to start with ! I don't think I will get a 'pass' to get down the lake before Christmas so hopefully it will not be too cold and freeze the lake again before I get a chance to try her out. Alan

Alan - ads90Warrant OfficerDown at the lake this morning. Boat is now complete with hand rails fitted and painted. 40MM 2-blade X type prop fitted and with the batteries moved back she went really well. The bow lifted well out of the water and got on the plane very easily - would not want or need to go any faster.Down at the lake this morning. Here is restored 1950s Aerokits wreck which was picked up at a antiques fair . She is running on MFA torpedo 500 motor & 7.2 volts 4600 nimh Battery which should make her get up and go !! The other small boat is a Aerokits 1950s fasts patrol which will be the next restored model .
- jelley_babyChief Petty Officer 1st ClassMany thanks have found a plan, now I know what it is, and can start finishing the boat, mine was just a frame bought some time ago on an Auction Site E---. this model dont need any introduction because there are thousands upon thousands of these kits were produced and even being produce as I post this this build. I purchased this kit when it was first released in 1963. there was a discount store that sold anything from appliances to plastic models. I went in there one day to see what they have, there to my delight and surprise there was a stock table that must have had atleased a 100 or more of these kits they were sold for $11.95 but the only way the store could sells these they marked them down a little more then half price, the sale tag on the stock table and the kit was $ 4.95 with a steal of a deal I couldn,t refuse. I bought 4 of them for $ 20.00. the kit was a typical gimic model for that day it was designed and ran on 6 D cell flashlight batteries, opperating a cam gear box that opperated the 5 inch closed mount turrets torpedo tubes and the twin screws. Also in the kit you a choice of courses that could be set if desired useing a cam that worked off the gear box. 10 years ago I scuttled the gearbox and modernized it with up to date RC she runs on a 6 volt dumas electric motor with a gear reduxction turning two screws and speed control Boats
- Dave MVice AdmiralYou say you bought 4? What happened to the other 3? I am always amazed at the deals available outside the UK. Perhaps if similar deals were available there would be more budding young modellers! You say you bought 4? What happened to the other 3? I am always amazed at the deals available outside the UK. Dave - deckapeMaster SeamanAhoy DaveAhoy Dave Thank you for your reply I am honered. The other 3 were given away as Christmas presents. Deals of yesteryear are over with the price of plastic his 10 to 20 times higher then the price I paid back in that day. What once was a retail price of $11.95 is now $100.00 and going up.The details of the kit it is scaled in a odd scale of 1/225 giveing you a model length of 36 inch,s just under a meter. the kit came with a gearbox that opperated the turrets, torpedo tubes and turning the twin screws. in order to sail the selected course, there are 4 cams that ride off the gearbox circle, square figure eight, and straight . this was gimic model there were many in the 1950, through the 1960,s but much seriousness is applied to scale and RC these gimic models are now radio controlled. the insides are quite small to work with. But still large enought to modifiy it to RC opperation. get rid of the relic gearbox and 9.0 electric motor, you need to add a 6 volt motor and gear reduction box. speed controll and a new rudder linkage system. Still today the kit is still worth looking in to. The only modification I made as to the overal perspective of appearence is the Hull I am a retired navy man of 30 years I have a trained eye for destroyers I served on 4 of them. the kits hull from the bridge superstructure to the bow the camber is allwrong useing plastic surgury and sheet plastic that portion of the hull has to be raised up to the proper camber, I also added bilge keels the kit didn,t have them. all kits from the 1950,s throught the 60,s never paid that much attention to scale and detail. not much nit picken in that da neither. - LylePetty Officer 2nd ClassHI harleydreaml, still looking at your Aerokits Torpedo boat and it is a very nice model from a colonials perspective. if I live long enough I may be lucky to obtain a set of copies of the hull formers and keel for a build . I have the Hebert Adams book of his model boats which he later led to his model boat kit company 'Adamcraft' and he did a set of drawings of a/the Elco type Torpedo Boat in his book. I always wondered whether the Aerokits EVER BORROWED the drawings to make the commercial model? Whatever happened, it is nice to see such a stunner model which was not too populace as the Crash Boat/Sea Queen sales etc. A now passed away mate had one 20 /30 years ago with a I/c 25/30? and it planed and turned flat and nicely. in OZ we still CAN operate I/c easy and do not need to trail out an electric cable for power to get more than 5 minutes on the pond? Keep building good craft. - Dave MVice AdmiralHI HarleyHI Harley I recently acquired a model that looks very similar to your model. Its all wood hulled about 3ft by 7ins. I was on the point of dispatching to the tip as it is so heavy I didn't think I could ever make it go on the plane. However having seen your Aerokits box and model its possible this may be an original or copy. Construction is very similar to the Fire Tender inside. Any chance that you could post a picture of your model with the lid off? Model looks the business in action.

It was built as a fun boat so I could sail with my friend Peter thomas with his variuos boats.
Several things have now been added since this boat was first built, IE smoking stacks, fireing torpedoes and magnetic pickups for colecting them. Also has working radar/moving gun + a home built bec.
Flag poles and flags/compas has been added on the superstructure.
Each motor draws 6amps at full power, I have measured the speed from one point to another at a spacing of 60mtrs, and timed at 15 seconds, but this is a bit fast for this boat as she starts to plane out of the water.
We sail her at New Brighton lake on the wirral most wednesdays. As the weather is now a bit cool I have just purchased a simular model to this at 1:48 scale 110ft island class USCG Patrol boat so I can look at them both in action when the weather picks up. Anyone wanting info can contact me via this website.
