Bermuda rigged "Slim Nip"
Seen here on on here maiden voyage this weekend - my Bermuda rigged "Slim Nip" evolved from many hours of enjoyment I have had building, sailing and re tweaking previous "Nips".
The Bermuda rigged "Slim Nip" was a natural progression from my recent uni rigged "Slim Nip" - I just had to explore how an extended (75cm) Bermuda rigged hull would look and sail ?.
The results so far are - Very pleasing !.

Thanks for the comments guys !.
Still a bit unsure what will happen when she gets a good blow ! - I don't enjoy sailing in a howling gale but I can alter the keel weight if necessary and alter the jib fixing point along with sail area combinations.
Still all very suck it and see ! .
    Enjoy !

    Well Done Phil,

It's good to see you improving an already very successful design with a few very effective tweaks.

Orca complete with crew
At the club pond today I have completed the Orca to my satisfaction. the crew figures are complete and fitted in situ, Matt Hooper at the helm, captain Quint up front with the harpoon gun, chief Brody serving out the smelly chum at the stern. The battery ran for at least 1 hour, it’s a 3s lipo 2200,100c when coupled to the charger it had 70 % left in

    Hi Rogal,

Many thanks for the photos - a really impressive model!!

Each to his own, but I much prefer small water craft modelled to 1\24, 1\16 or even 1\12 scale - rather than far larger ships unavoidably modelled on a tiny scale.

With best wishes. Dr John F. Leeds and Bradford. MBC. 😊😊😊

I have been trying out my new 3D printer
I have been using a 3D printer now for over 5 years. My first was a Prusa i3 which I extensively modified over the years and looked more like some creation rather than a printer, but it worked. The problem I always had, was tall things being thrown off the bed 🤣 and slow printing. So now I have a Creality Ender5-S1 running Klipper software. What a dramatic difference. I was in the process of designing a 3D printable boat in FreeCad which was designed with 3D printing in mind. Then I thought someone must have had the same idea. Sure enough I found a speed boat on https://www.thingiverse.com/

That's amazing....bet it takes a lot of work to programme it to do that.

Thanks everyone for the comments and yes I will try out the tug one day. Next project is a DF65 ⛵. I already have two, one bought and one made in the conventional way of plank on frame with Balsa wood. I will take a look at the Dragonfly and post if I think I can do it. The CAD work takes longer than the printing.

"Katie the Kayaker" - trial #2
Read Grahams blog here :-
https://model-boats.com/blogs/111166

Quote from blog :-
"The paddling action is produced with a combination of mechanics and software control. A few changes were made to the software to improve the ability to steer. There is still more to be done to improve this. If you watch carefully at 0:35 seconds in the video, you can see the rudder compensating for the paddle stroke to help keep Katie moving in a straight line."

"Katie the Kayaker"
"Katie the Kayaker" was the inspiration and result many hours of work and head scratching by designer/creator and modelmaker Graham Royle who is a member of the Buxton Model Boat Club.

Grahams full blog of his "RC Kayak" project can be found here -

Here is Gaham`s latest account of the - "Maiden Voyage"

Before the maiden (!) voyage, a quick head 'transplant' !! I'd like to introduce 'Katie the Kayaker' 😂🤣

It was with some trepidation that Katie was carefully launched onto the Buxton lake. An ideal day last weekend with very little wind. I knew she would float, but would she move, and be controllable? Well the answer is yes - sort of 🤔

Thanks to Philcaretaker for the video clip.

She managed to paddle out, turn and paddle back, which was a great start. At least she didn't need rescuing. Shame she wouldn't keep hold of the paddle!

The paddle blades are not feathered at the right angle. The starboard blade is at the wrong angle and is hitting the water causing the kayak to rock excessively from side to side.

Once back on dry land, the kayak was checked inside for water. There was just a drop but nothing to worry about, which was also a relief.

So, overall it was reasonably successful, but several teething problems to be resolved before the next outing.👍

Such a great model and an even better story Alan, although there was a tragic and sad ending to the full size boat it is great to see such a fine model. Graham

January 2023 - Weather being kind for now and the end of the month saw a great selection of models out on the lake _ but not without incedents !.
NOTE :- Look out for the collision !! (around 0.30 seconds into the video). - thankfully no major damage. And the rescue right at the end !.

Sorry to hear of the flooding and I am glad you had minimum damage. It seems that mother nature is not to happy about the way we humans have been treating her and the earth and she is showing her rath.

Sorry to hear about the mess the storm has left behind JB. I hope that damage to your house is minimal and that your estuary returns to normal soon. I remember you saying recently that the summer had not been so good and then this!☹️

Moonbeam with J class sails
Although the Moonbeam was a classic looking yacht, it was certainly over canvas. Therefore I decided to re-rig it with a Nottingham J class second set of sails. It seems well balanced and still looks like a classic yacht. The video is from its first sail.

    Andy,
Part of my message was omitted. It should read -

You will see that the email addresses are slightly different. Not sure which one to use but I was successful with the first one and that is the one that I have listed in my 'Contacts'.

The sails look good and your Moonbeam sails well. However, I think you have lost the original charm of a superb yacht that sails well in most winds. We have 3 Moonbeam yachts in our Club and they look stunning under full sail as intended.

    Hi Bruce.
I have got it working but not before carrying out some modifications.
Firstl was one of the geared motors would not fit as it wanted to go through the deck cover. I made a small tool box, cut the cover and covered the end of the motor.
The second was that the lift height would never get the boat over the railings. I added a 40mm spacer to increase the height. All is good now.😊
