Question of the Day?

The answer to the 9/11 question is "none of the above".
The Kyrenia sank around 400BC and was discovered in 1965.
The Mary Rose was discovered in 1971 and raised in 1982
Since no answers were correct, I chose not to answer.
I'm sure this is a recycled question.

Must admit that I have not been posting much of late.
It seams life gets in the way and we forget that this forum is still the best going and our members continue to be active.

Question of the Day?

Hi all, I put together a few Quizzes for our club some years back. It is not easy but at least they were valid questions and mostly right answers.

I would warn all before the quiz that I am happy to receive any queries about the answers I provide, all written on either side of a £5 note, which is non-refundable. I think it would be a £10 now!

It cut any arguments!

Question of the Day?

Hmm! We're into a string of repeat questions🙄 Most of which are themselves questionable.
And sure enough the corresponding 'comments' to them are also repeating.
As WCMBC wrote, "Sorry SA. I'm leaving this codswallop👎👎👎", so have I.
The poor old cods have been walloped enough.

It's long since time to stop this nonsense. It has missed it's original objective of promoting maritime knowledge amongst our members. Although I do acknowledge that the ensuing debates have contributed to our general maritime awareness. but PLEASE not ad infinitum with the same same daft questions.
QotD, and to a lesser extent Wordle, are strangling this once wonderful site.
I've been tracking the 'Notifications' I still receive (despite recently 'cancelling' Quiz Notifications in my account😠) and I find that on average 80% are QotD or Wordle related. Mostly QotD debates over the AI cock ups.
Actual Model Boat related postings have significantly declined continuously since the introduction of these quizzes. Many of our once stalwart and expert contributors have gone silent☹️
Since the AI is obviously incapable of finding sensible questions, and checking that they ARE new have not been asked before and are truly maritime related (e.g. not CAPTAIN Hastings of the Poirot stories or CAPTAIN Peacock from 'Are you being served?') it is time to send the AI back to school, or better into Digital Valhalla.

@stephen (Fireboat) PLEASE can we scrap this nonsense and go back to the annual Christmas Quiz, with prizes donated by members? I would be happy (as before) to donate prizes from my plans, kits, books collection.
That would once again be something to look forward to once a year, rather than the current daily DREAD!!

G'night All, Sweet dreams, Doug😎
Sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite😁😁😁

Question of the Day?

Yep, the Tomahawk can due just about anything these days. All four SSGN's Guided Missile subs (converted SSBN's) can launch 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles if required with "dial-a-yield" capacity of 5 to 200 Kilotons each. A scary thought.

Question of the Day?

Another BS question, cruise missiles can be launched by aircraft, ships and land based launchers as well as subs. The the same goes for ballistic missiles. So todays answer should be B and C or either. 🤔

Question of the Day?

I went straight for Russia as that is who I thought would have been the the one with the largest fleet of Subs. Only to get it wrong.I have been floating at 96% for the last few days questions, and now dropped down to 92%. Bummer. I would have thought if not Russia it would have been America, never in my mind come up with China.

I have also now just Googled this and according to Google this is what the answer has come up as.

Russia has the largest submarine fleet in the world, with 65 submarines, followed by the U.S. with 64 and China with 61. Together, these three countries account for 40% of the world's submarine fleet.

So who is correct?

But it also says that America has the largest fleet of Nuclear powered Submarines in the world, 66 in total. So that beats Russia's 65 Submarines, So what is the answer,
If Google can contradict itself then who can get it correct ???
I'm lost completely.

The only reason I put down China was that yesterday I saw a diagram of the top 10 and that listed China as number one, I thought that Russia was one and USA was two. I was doing research for my RC submarine when this popped up.

"Russia has the largest submarine fleet in the world, with 65 submarines as of July 2024. The United States is second with 64 submarines, and China is third with 61. Together, these three countries have 40% of the world's submarine fleet."

Question of the Day?

As Simplesailor's chart shows, the only answer that is remotely correct is "Running".
The AI answer "Close Reach" is the most far from correct of the choices as it is by definition sailing into the wind.
My gut told me this was another of those questions left unanswered because Broad Reach was not a choice. So picking whatever choice AI thinks is the answer was a shot in the dark.
Running was my pick, because all sailing downwind is essentially some form of "Running" with the wind.
Frustrating .....

Question of the Day?

And therewith I start my golf game. The point of sail has nothing to do where the wind is behind the boat. If the wind is slightly behind the boat it means its at 89 degrees aft. That is not close reach. If its coming directly from the back you can still point close reach but it will be wasting sail space.

If the wind is coming from an angle behind the boat, to my understanding that’s a broad reach, a close reach is somewhere between the wind coming abeam to over the bow at an angle.

Question of the Day?

There was a very good episode on a paddle steamer in Egypt!

But he is not the type to be too close to because of all the crime around him, dodgy altogether.
Captain Hastings is a product of the private schools in the early 1900s, terribly nice been in the army and trades on his last rank of Captain, but a good gopher.

However the actual filming is a delight and alternate episodes were directed by their own team and both won awards.
I love the old London taxis used and had a dinky toy model of one when younger.

The series could not go on forever and eventually he dies on his last case!

Other actors have tried their hand in the role but pale (especially the current one) into insignificance in comparison to David Suchet. Some might note his brother was a TV newsreader.
I should add I did like Peter Ustinov in the part!

Question of the Day?

It changes every time the boat reverses direction. They have a special crew member on board. LAMP CHANGER. Bit of a tedious job, but necessary. The job description goes something like:

MUST BE ABLE TO CHANGE ALL LIGHT BULBS SIDE-TO-SIDE AND END-TO-END WHILE AT TERMINAL LOADING AND UNLOADING CARGO AND PASSENGERS.

What!?! You don't believe me? Look it up!

The more modern double-enders have 2 different bulbs at each lamp and a switch connected to the ENGINE REVERSE. Wired sorta like back-up lights on the cars
