Question of the Day?

My answer is…….I use everything. If there is no hurry, fresh clean wood, I use yellow waterproof carpenters glue. If I am joining unlike materials, wood to metal, for example it’s epoxy. Need to just stick a little piece on, CA. Occasionally to avoid squeeze-out on painted surface, I choose double-stick tape. Modern double-stick tape isn’t like the stuff you use for Christmas presents, a little piece holds like iron. Whatever is best for the job.

Question of the Day?

I'm using Aliphatic glue which I think is called carpenter's yellow glue. The reason I'm using this is because I've been told it is waterproof and I'm coating fully the internal side of each plank as they are being attached to the frames. It will be very difficult to waterproof later as some parts of planks will be inaccessible. The instructions also advise to do this but they said water the glue down. I've not watered the glue down as an internet post about this type of glue said that the glue doesn't need to be watered down for waterproofing. Disadvantage is that it doesn't go off very quickly like CA. On my Riva build I used the same method except I spotted in-between with CA to hold the plank in place so I didn't spoil the mahogany finish with nail holes! This method worked really well. I will probably use this method on the 2nd layer of planking on my Mantua Bruma. 😊

Another dumb question, carpenters glue glue is not water resistant so why would you use it.

Last time I used a carpenters yellow glue was probably 25 years ago. Ca, cellulose and epoxy are what I use.

Question of the Day?

Very probably Isaac,🤓
In modern terms; at sea, a league is three nmi (3.452 mi; 5.556 km).
So 20,000 leagues would be
60,000 Nautical Miles,
69,040 Statute Miles,
111,120 km.
Getting on for 3 laps around the world Ross. Circumference of Earth at Equator = 40,075 km.
I believe that many ships and subs have covered such distances during the course of their commercial/operational lives. Even Nemo didn't stay submerged the whole time😉
A nuke sub might manage it, at least until they run out of Hershey bars😋😋😮

RNinMunich, You say,,"Another repeat today!
So anyone who screwed up last time gets another chance".

But you loose 3% when you get 1 question wrong and it tacks about 6 right questions to get 1% back.

Ross, as well as re phrasing current questions, surely, with the combined knowlege of the membership we can come up with questions on nautical matters, our hobby and perhaps even relevant historic subjects. We can all learn fron one another and expand our own knowlege...

Question of the Day?

Could we all submit our choice of question to a quizmaster for editing and posting? This group could re-write two thirds of current questions so that they are correct. Added bonus is it could end up having a more international flavour. Yes occasionally you will be faced with your own question

Question of the Day?

Of course being difficult to insult is an insult on its own.
We do seem to have 'leaders' who think either, I am rich enough to inform, or perhaps have decided that the word is now mightier than the pen!

We had an elected Mayor who had been a school teacher and she rescued our Town from the chaos of a previous party administration. Her specialised subject was 'special needs', which makes you think! She was very sensible and managed us for 16 years and was then thrtust upwards. Her successor has carried on as before and you still get people who complain! The Town has never been better managed but we have an idiot MP! He is largely side-lined by the elected Mayor.

Question of the Day?

Commododore-H,
I wouldn't insult the question master by saying they were stupid questions. I would just say it is being worded wrongly.
The question needs to bee thought out carefully before it's written out.

I am a member of a Rover Classic Car Site and I have asked many questions to what would sound to be a stupid question. When I have asked it I have said I have a stupid question to ask and then written it. People have come back saying that's not a stupid question you have worded it correctly and the answer is and lots of people have come back with helpful answers.

Question of the Day?

I answered steam bending, and it was wrong, but then surely, you wouldn't be able to fit all the strips without steam bending them as they would break. They would match the chine strips that you have had to steam bend to fit the hull skeleton in the first place?? Even my ply skins I have had to steam bend to get to fit wouldn't they be the same to a degree as the planking strips ?? I have lost 3% for that?? that doesn't make sense. Planking ? ISN'T the process that's the FITTING.

Question of the Day?

Instead of scrapping QotD, could we not each do say 4 week stints at being Quizmaster and set 4 questions with proper answers. Obviously quizmaster of the month would be precluded from answering the question. Such a path may prove too complicated to administer but I thought I would toss the idea into the hat so to speak. It would be interesting to get questions from different parts of the world....

Question of the Day?

I agree the answer could be right or wrong. If anyone watched "Acorn to Arabella" or the rebuild of "Tally-Ho" (Samson Boat Company) on YouTube they would understand the process and the terms. Not all decking or as I call it frame cladding of the hull has to be steam bent. I chose steam bending because it was what I had just been doing on a model boat for the decking.😂

Question of the Day?

Another one of these questions where the answer is wrong. Steam-bending would be more correct than planking as planking is not necessary curved. I think it would be better to scrap Question of the Day if we cannot come up with decent questions.😠

Question of the Day?

The main part of the question is 'the process of bending thin strips of wood to create the curves' in my opinion should have been steam bending - exactly what I'm currently doing on my model! Once the strip is the correct shape I can then use these to start planking the hull. What is this world going to be like if we trust AI to do everything!😀😀
