Found a sound by accident which sounds quite a bit like the sound of the GM Detroit 453 2 stroke diesels fitted to this boat (still has these today) Vid from cockpit is the sound I discovered while mucking around with some old electric motors, and my new voltage controllers which just turned up.
I'll add the link to the real engine for comparison (next post here). Sounds to be revving really high but being 2 stroke it's only doing around 2800 rpm!

And the prize goes to..., perhaps if I (thr) hum along Doug?😊 (see reply to Martin for answer) It's real hard to get just the right sound to match a model (the sound units I have are not too bad) but there must be ways of doing it without having to spend lots of money on complicated sound units with set programmed sounds. In the case of my sound units, they are real engine sounds, programmed to be proportional on internal SD card but they don't quite match the model). A lot depends on the internal volume of the model (resonator), sound unit and speaker/placement.
The search will continue for a cheap alternative.

Here are pictures of HMS Exeter - I built her over a period of time plank on frame hull, covered in styrene to simulate plating on the hull. The deck is all planked with individual planks - the guns are fully rotating and elevating but not firing :-).

Hi there
senile moment for me :-) as there is already a short build of HMS Exeter on here if you do a search - you will come across the build by me and there are some closeup pics on there.

More great photos in this series taken by my friend at Albert Park Lake in Melbourne. These of my P28 - Ensign Simitzopoulos. Great wave patterns. These photos were all poster size in detail. I have had to shrink them to get them posted here. This boat is in my harbour.
The 1/35 scale boat is scratch-built, mainly from Balsawood and marine ply with a fibreglass covering. The guns can elevate and rotate. The radar units both rotate and there are LED navigation lights that I forgot to turn on. There is also a flashing red LED strobe warning system. It needs a little work to get the 4 LEDs a bright brighter.

I bought the Moorcock from a fellow boater and decided to rebuild her as the Moorcock. The hull was stripped bare and the prop-shaft tube removed and completely remade with a new prop. The hull was then repainted and the life boat and davits added The superstructure was cleaned up and remade with a Robbe spring loaded grappling iron added to the rear deck. She is powered by a 24v scooted motor salvaged from a garbage bin and has 4 x 12v 7amh SLA's to provide power. She is a good strong vesel to sail and is often used as a recovery tug.

On the pond today. Sailing well, though took on water easily over the combing into the cockpit. So back home I added a clear covering which should take care of that problem.

Boat looked great. The boat ran just fine. Not too much over scale speed. It's good to have a little more speed to avert obstacles, especially oyher boats that don't know where they are.

Scratch built from a 1975 free plan, hull is balsa frames sheeted with basswood and covered with 3/4 oz fibreglass cloth, superstructure is styrene sheet, missile launcher from balsa block, forward bofors torpedo launcher from styrene sheet and wood dowl, photo etch ladders, white metal handrail stanchions, other fittings are brass and resin, lw-02 radar and directors are from shape ways rudders and stabilizers are balsa block, you get the idea.
A very nice execution of the old Model Boats free plan. I still have those plans (somewhat tatty after all these years) as well as the MB magazine they came with. How does she sail? Best regards, Glyn

Many thanks for your kind words, I've not sailed her yet, only test tank and had to up the water line a little bit for more stability, I also scaled up the plans to true 1/96 as the plan is around 1/100, the 1/96 fittings I bought from fleetscale were out of scale to the plan, and using the 1.1 water line length noted in the magazine article.

Here is the last of the Lowestoft sailing trawlers. Model built using working drawings kindly supplied by the Sailing Trust. Model about 12 years old. I got a little carried away on detail! As expected she sails and handles well as all the old work sailors do.
Drop keel and rudder extension added when sailing. I was intrigued to discover that the deck winch was steam powered,no doubt to help with taking in the trawl net.

Hello,
Just spotted your boat, I love the gaff-rigged working craft. Built one, a Falmouth fishing boat, and I plan to do more. Your boat is very impressive, nice quality workmanship and attention to detail.
If you don't mind I am curious about a couple of things. is it plank on plank? Did you fiberglass over the hull or just paint. What kind of wood do you use for planking.
I to, work from old drawings plans with lines and offsets.
Great work!
Regards, Joe

Hi Joe,
In answer to your queries, Hull was built in the bread and butter system using deal sealed inside and out with coats of yacht varnish and painted using acrylic. Subsequent models of Wherries and Chinese Junks were plank on frame using 1/8” balsa strips sealed with resin, varnish inside and out, with again acrylic paint.
Balsa easier to work with to gain experience - reasonable effectiveness both in carvel and clinker planking.
All the best and good sailing.

Scratch-built semi-scale from images of a unique vessel used for tug and recovery work on the Norfolk Broads. Was originally steam powered with a fire pump engine, now using diesel. Funnel is hinged to go under low bridges!
