Camera Boat - update - ( NOTE PULSING NOISE ?? )

Just a quick update with the new camera boat before fitting and running with the Gopro attached.
Observations :-
1. Maneuverability - Great - but better control with high and low rate options!.
2. Speed - Too much ? - may be , but enough for me to throttle back quickly !.
3. Camera - Good balance and rotation for 360*.
4. Cost - Minimal - ie. Motor & ESC kit from Hobbybitz.
5. Noise - 5/10
6. Fun Factor - 10/10 - just for fun ! - enjoy RC Sailing !.

NOTE - I would be interested to know of any theories in respect of the "PULSING NOISE" of the motor ?????

"Rescue Launch "

Grandad Graham was looking after his 7 year old grandson for the day, grandson Finley asked (several times) - he could help building a model boat. After he had gone home, Graham started to think about a boat he could help build. Graham had come across "HAkits" in a couple of blogs on the https://model-boats.com/ website, he then decided that their Rescue Launch would make a nice model for a 7 year old. The kit was duly ordered and arrived a few days later.

Re the turns. The launch has a custom mixer built in to reduce the throttle on turns. The sharper the turn, the more the reduction. I didn’t want it rolling over attempting to turn flat out.😉

Master Hand seen at CreweMBC sail Monday 8th Nov 2021

Brian Clewes brought along a nice example of his scratch built Master Hand retired fishing boat, for a sail. When larger more powerful mechanised boats were introduced this type was abandoned. Many were rescued and turned into pleasure / racing type craft and that is what this model depicts. Not seen for some years but is ageing well. The static pics will be of interest to any modeller considering making a scale sailing ship of this type. I did film some video and will share this later when edited.

Hartley cabin boat on trailer

Short vid taken by a friend recently, of the model, towed by the RC scratch built Jeep -(taken with his tablet, - a bit shaky but he is over 80) I probably shouldn't have been doing circles around him, but we were doing this in a carpark behind his apartment, (magic location by the way, right on a marina.) Had trouble finding reverse due to the EL Cheepo ESC,- have a new one coming. Jeep uses a geared 550 motor on 3s LiPo.

Boat is featured on waitematawoodys.com today as well, with all the big boats,- quite a privilege, as they don't often feature models! Lucky to have had my ST and HSL on there in the past also, as they were models of ex NZ RNZAF boats which were being featured.

I'm afraid my days of building real boats are long past. I have difficulty in finding enough strength to perform even the simplest tasks, Alice has to come to my aid for almost everything these days. I was very pleased that I managed to finish the rigging of my latest barge project a few days ago with only the slightest intervention from her -and that's a model!. Actually the only time I ever built a boat from a plan was when someone gave me a part built Wharram cat. The rest of the time I built on the old adage of if it looks right, it probably is. And, blowing my own trumpet, it always seemed to work for me.

Hi Nerys, you're doing well to do what you are doing still under the circumstances, and you are not just sitting in a wicker chair staring out the window. Your models are great and a credit to you, and you are obviously enjoying them. I'm the same (re - if it looks right.......) as most of my models, (boats and planes) are scratch built or highly modified kits or resurrected and improved bin jobs from other modellers.

The only model boat I've built from a proper plan, was my Vic Smeed MTB, the rest have been from drawings from model magazines. I built a 15ft delta hulled racer in the late 70s using the 'looks right' method, and powered it with a 75hp outboard. Managed to get 50mph out of it, and it handled quite well. Blew the motor up before I could refine it unfortunately. As kid we built 8ft skimmers, powered with a 10hp outboard which were a lot of fun as well.

I've enjoyed restoring 5 small boats (plus a f/glass clinker sailing dinghy for my son) and completely fitting out my Hartley from a shell, but the price of materials is getting prohibitive these days, and approaching the price of a small new car to build anything around 20ft. My 15ft day sailer for example (built 1986) would probably cost around $12,000 to build today complete. Not a lot of home building these days unfortunately due to the cost,- cheaper to buy a second hand boat ready to sail or motor.

I think we are lucky to be able to build from an idea without a plan and have it work, as many people are not as fortunate. Perhaps boating experience gives you an idea of how things should work. We have a top boatbuilding company here who started building fantastic launches, starting with a 'looks right' half model,- taking measurements from it and scaling them up. Has worked well for them since the 50s

Vic Smeed Thornycroft MTB maiden voyage

My Vic Smeed Thornycroft MTB has been sitting in dry dock over the summer, due to holidays but also procrastination due to my fear that when I finally launched her she'd go straight to the bottom...

Anyway, this morning I plucked up courage, took her down to Black Park lake near Slough and chucked her in. She appeared to sit well in the water. I gently engaged the throttle and waved a tearful farewell as she moved off 20 yards or so towards the middle of the lake. I took her round in a wide arc and back to port. I repeated this a couple of times and did some straight runs until the tiller mechanism jammed, fortunately she was within grabbing distance.

I was so relieved and pleased that she worked. She had a good turn of speed (nothing too dramatic) and seemed to steer well, keeping fairly upright.

There appeared to be little if any water ingress. The water cooling system for the ESC didn't work (I suspect kinks in the tube) but it didn't appear to be overheating. I'll attend to that and also the tiller mechanism before I take her out again.

Finally got my sea legs!

Must be pretty solid Nick, mine weighs 2.8kg with a 3s 3000mAh LiPo. Ply from memory was only about 1.5mm. Nothing wrong with a bit of weight, makes them run a bit more realistically. The originals looked like they were sinking with the weight of the fuel and 4 big heavy Thornycroft v12s in the back.

yes i was a bit taken aback when i weighed her, but to my untrained eye she seemed to sit ok in the water and i didn't really want her skipping over the ripples 😂

FAIRACRE BROADS CRUISER, NEW MOTOR AND ESC

Fitted the new 550 45T brushed motor as a replacement for the ancient and slow 70s Graupner monoperm. Goes a lot better now and has a decent speed range. Handles and rides quite well for a skinny boat. Prop is a Graupner 40mm 2 blade (don't know the pitch, -fairly fine) Using a 2200mAh 2S LiPo battery which probably gives around an hours running slowly, or 30 mins of hooning around.

Battery was only charged to 8.25v and ended up at 7.7v. (45%) after about 3/4 hr. I'll probably fit a Hobbywing ESC as well, for a bit better reverse action, as the El cheapo car one is a bit slow finding reverse at times.

Sea Scout 'Jessica' Sea Trial - at last!

Part 1. ideal conditions; nearly 30°C, cool Bier at hand😜
Sea Scout built by Dad in the early sixties with a Taycol Target and 6V lead acid wet cells (very wet😡). Renovated and dragged into the 21st century over the last several months 😉

Motor: Propdrive 2830, 1000kV, 30mm 3 blade Raboesch prop. Quicrun 16BL30 (30A) ESC with BEC.
Tested with 3 battery types, all started with 99% measured capacity-
1. NiMh 4.2Ah 7.2V, nom. 408gm.
Result: Speed sedate (OK 😉scale river cruising!) No planing.
Max current: 3.6A
End status V / capacity left: At end of short run ca 3 mins. 7.78V 99%.
2. 2S LiPo 4.0Ah 7.4V nom. 257gm.
Result: Speed still sedate but due to lower batt weight at least the forefoot came out of the wet stuff! Max current: 4.1A
End status V / capacity left: At end of short run ca 3 mins. 8.25V 93%.
3. 3S LiPo 4.0Ah 11.1V nom. 315gm.
Result: Now we're getting somewhere!!😁
Good speed, manoeuvrability and planing 😊 Max current: 7.5A
End status: 11.95V 74% after several long runs, ca 20 mins total.
Estimated (extrapolated) endurance on a 4Ah LiPo around one hour - mostly 'full bore' - 'Pedal to the metal man' 😊

Hi Will,
The videos were all taken at stage 3. 'Now we're getting somewhere' with the 3S LiPo.
As depicted in the report there wasn't anything worth filming on either the 7.2V NiMh or the 7.4V 2S LiPo. Plod plod boring! I wasn't really surprised. I just wanted to know 😉

RC model Lulonga river tug

I built this model during four long years. my Lulonga is nearly whole scratchbuilt model (about 75 cm long) except the steering wheel and position lamps.
The model has a plywood and balsa hull construction ,plywood decks,from hard polystyrene sheets made superstructure,laminated with veneer. Sidewheels with skew paddles, two DC 12V independent electric motors with gearboxes controlled by ESC. Electric LED lights, steam sound module, sirene and horn.Tx/Rx 6 channel HK 2,4GHz.
completion expected in spring 2014

HARTLEY FLARELINE, JET. MOTOR COOLING MODS

Fitted a new bottom skin fitting for the water pump pickup(air/water/exhaust smoke system) - removing the pickup from the jet, as flow stopped when the jet stopped. Fitted a new transom skin fitting (RH side transom) for the ESC cooler exit, and took the water from the jet pickup for the ESC cooler. Everything seems to work well now, with the ESC water flow increasing with throttle. Now for a test on a decent day, (has to start with the rain and wind now, doesn't it?☹️)

USS Diver

A US Navy ARS ( Auxiliary Rescue Salvage ship), built to 1/48th scale. Twin screw with working radar, lights, anchor, and fire monitor. Built from a bare hull, with a lot of Thanks to Shapeways 3D printed parts. She is shown, at anchor, with a friend USN ATF ( Auxiliary tug Fleet) in the back ground.

Thank you. She was a challenge to build becuse the class changed aft the first three ships were built. All other after the third were completed with one aft mast and several different boom configurations. Interestingly, two of the original design hull went to the RN via Lend Lease and served the Australians. After the war they were sold to a British Columbian Tugboat firm and made historical reputations for themselves.

Motor Tug Seahorse

While I'm at it I have put up this video of my tug. I had been having problems with this and I completely replaced everything inside. Turns out the rudder servo was dodgy and the motor, a geared 500 was far too poky. It now performs beautifully and very quietly. Obviously it's an old Graupner Bugsier but refurbished by me to look a bit more like a British tug. The motor is a low noise 500 with direct drive mounted on a rubber sheet - the only noise is a whine from the esc.

Range Safety Launch

Hi. This is my 2nd scratch built boat since lock down began. The first was the H S L 103 finished 6/7 weeks ago. Still waiting to be tested outside of workshop. This one is built on a fibre glass hull,and has a length of 44 inches and a beam of 16. My power plant is twin out runner motors purple power. 600kv, running through twin 70 amp ESC and with 4 cell 5000 amp lipos feeding them. All accommodation is made using 6 mm three ply. And every fitting you see on the boat was scratch built by me. Lighting system is 12 v grain of wheat .props are three bladed brass 45 mm by prop shop
