The saga of the leaking Clive Puffer Several friends had mention to me that the prop needed to be above the water line so out came stuffing box mounted motor higher so prop shaft above water line & replace shaft & prop shaft . While doing all this It donned on me like a light going off that the rubber shaft was lower than the water line & I think water was entering up rudder shaft . Photo shows area where water was when it was in water & the tube for the rudder shaft was below that so added more stern depth .Made up another rudder shaft that is higher & tube is also now higher.

Chum444, is your "stuffing box" the size of the large diameter tube under the large filler and the rest of the shaft slips into the shaft tube? If so, the sealing area seems kind of small.

My preference is to have a fairly large sealing area. For example, using the attached drawing, the two ends where the shaft slip fits into are each about 5/8 inch long leaving a long void between the shaft OD and the tube's ID. [EDITED: this area is filled with the sealant lube.] Thus I have no problem with leakage when the entire shaft is below the waterline.

Also... as you can see in the photo, the prop shaft is horizontal and sits about 2 inches (50mm) below the waterline. No leaks if you make the stuffing box long enough and use the right sealant lube.

Moorcock
I bought the Moorcock from a fellow boater and decided to rebuild her as the Moorcock. The hull was stripped bare and the prop-shaft tube removed and completely remade with a new prop. The hull was then repainted and the life boat and davits added The superstructure was cleaned up and remade with a Robbe spring loaded grappling iron added to the rear deck. She is powered by a 24v scooted motor salvaged from a garbage bin and has 4 x 12v 7amh SLA's to provide power. She is a good strong vesel to sail and is often used as a recovery tug.

Shots from the Chichester Canal RC Boat Run 2018. A bit of an endurance run and all except my galleon made it. Mine decided to not be attached to the prop shaft after a bit. Several children took part and several of the local clubs were there to enjoy the sunshine and company

PT 109
PT 109 was one of the hundreds of motor torpedo boats (PT) of the PT 103 class completed between 1942 and 1945 by Elco Naval Division of Electric Boat Company at Bayonne, New Jersey. The Elco boats were the largest in size of the three types of PT boats built for U.S. use during World War II. Wooden-hulled, 80 feet long with a 20-foot, 8-inch beam, the Elco PT boats had three 12-cylinder Packard gasoline engines generating a total of 4,500 horsepower for a designed speed of 41 knots. With accommodations for 3 officers and 14 men, the crew varied from 12 to 14. its full-load displacement was 56 tons. Early Elco boats had two 20mm guns, four .50-caliber machine guns, and two or four 21-inch torpedo tubes. Some of them carried depth charges or mine racks. Later boats mounted one 40mm gun and four torpedo launching racks. Many boats received ad-hoc refits at advanced bases, mounting such light guns as Army Air Forces 37mm aircraft guns and even Japanese 23mm guns. Some PTs later received rocket launchers.

This Proboat PT 109 model was brought in 2013 for £100 these boats are rare now, This one had a few faults with the propshafts they were bent and noisy both were replaced, with quality 4mm shafts, motors twin 600s were also replaced by Graupner versions along with mounts and couplings, basically all the running gear, also two ESCs by Aquapower were added and a 2.4G RC system.

CG-52301 "TRIUMPH"
This is my latest progress on the Barracuda RC Boats 52' MLB, US COAST GUARD "TRIUMPH"CG- 52301. I was up until 0500 this AM attempting to finish sheathing the hull. The deck housings are just about ready for paint. I really don't enjoy covering natural wood, but it's a must to achieve proper detail, I reckon. I'm awaiting 1/8" scribed sheathing for the deck, the fantail semicircle will be 1/16" sheathing, and the outboard perimeter of the deck will be 3/16" light mahogany strips. She's powered by a 775 Johnson-type 6-12v motor turning a 4mm shaft and a 75mm 5-blade Raboesch wheel. The 5-blade isn't OEM, but I reckoned she needed some extra muscle to get to the party in distress.

Great seeing your model. I look forward to pictures of her underway. I served at the National Motor Lifeboat School in the '80's (30' SRB's and 44' MLB's) and Station Cape Disappointment (47' and 52' MLB's).

PT 109 26CC
She is a 50" 26 cc petrol engine boat. She runs very well and sits on the water on the turns as if she is stuck to it. Like an idiot I run her up the side of the pond and she now needs both a new propshaft and prop.

Norstar Wave Princess
Built this Wave Princess 30 years ago meaning to use it with my children. Languished in attic since and now retired going to resurrect her for Grandchildren and would welcome any advice on motor size, prop shaft length, Propeller size etc etc. Picked up an as new MacGregor Digimac 111 transmitter receiver and servos at Boot Sale for £5, seems fitting I should use it for the old girl.

Ayton cross or as close as..
I bought a used hull of the Ayton Cross and look all over the internet for some plans but found none.
I did find a lot of images though.

I bought most if not all of the fittings and since have decided that the way to go is to make what you can from what I can get hold of.

So all other model boats are and will be scratch made.
I have two on the burner at the moment.

Anyway some of the Ayton Cross looks right some of it does not.

But I can always do it again as I hopefully get a little better.
This one again is awaiting Ballast and it will be ready to go.
I fitted two Engel 12 volt motors and made the mounts in grp then Laminated them into position..

Everything has been hand painted and slightly aged .

The bow thruster was made using some household plumbing pipe a small propshaft Again home made and it works very well.

Something to play with as I build hopefully better.

If you research who the original builders were, then the plans would be most likely be available from the archives of the builders. in most cases where vessels were built in Scotland for instance, the plans, if available would be held either by the Glasgow University Archives or the Scottish Archives. Although there are costs involved in obtaining copies of the originals, it is well worth it in the long run so that the details is correct. The model looks great.
