Very sad news about Nerys plus update on her final boat project

Hallo Alice,
Just noticed that you are online. Pleased to see that😀
How are you bearing up?

I just wanted to say that I think it is clear what the name of Nerys' last command should be-
"CAPTAIN NERYS". Home port; Ammanford or Barry?

Sad to hear news of Nerys passing. She was such an inspiration to many on this site, not only for posting about her own builds and sailing experience -large and small, but also for the encouragement and sound advice given to others, including myself. I wish her much happy boating in the next world!

Very sad news about Nerys plus update on her final boat project

I am so sorry to read the passing of Nerys. I am certain that she will be sadly missed. When I first joined this website a short while ago, as a complete beginner, I posted on the forum asking for some advice in choosing a sailboat to build. It was recommended to me to contact Nerys which I did and had a pleasant conversation with her and received some valuable advice.

I have never spoken to Alice but I send my condolences to her at this very sad time.

Very sad news about Nerys plus update on her final boat project

Devastating news once again. Nerys will be sorely missed, she helped so many, as is a reflection of all the kind words from other members here.

She was also very kind, often donating the prize pot for the December quiz of port & starboard socks (it did make me laugh to receive bundles of pairs of socks in the post).

She'll never be forgotten. With your permission, I would be happy to put together a fitting tribute.

Very sad news about Nerys plus update on her final boat project

Dear Alice.
I was so sorry to hear your sad news. Nerys, as others have said, was always there to give support and help and share her wealth of knowledge about all things. We will all miss the reports of your local coastline. Time does help to heal the terrible feelings you have right now and you can then look back on all the lovely times you had together with a smile. I know this from experience.
Best wishes and love,
Peter.

Very sad news about Nerys plus update on her final boat project

Alice, I’m greatly saddened to hear of Nerys passing. I didn’t know her well, only thru this forum, but she always had kind words for my build, and I remember her joining in the “ Night Watch” when we would all report in after “patrols”. She had a great wealth of knowledge, and at least to us always in good spirits even while her health wasn’t the best. She was an interesting, funny lady. Wish I could have met her in person.
Take your time. Just remember she loved you.
After Teresa and I lost our first child my buddy was trying to console me, and he said grief is like a pothole. When you first hit it it’s jarring, throws you all over the road. After time it fills in a bit and the edges aren’t so sharp. It’s still there, just not as abrupt.
If you need any advice about finishing up that boat, you just ask any of us, we’ll bend over backwards to help.
Again, take care, know we’re all thinking of you.

Very sad news about Nerys plus update on her final boat project

Dear Alice,
I can empathise with your feelings right now. My most heartfelt condolences.
Even when you have a premonition that something will happen or has happened, as I had recently, it still comes as a shattering shock. The same premonition that I had before my mother died last August. When my sister phoned I just knew what she was going to tell me.
Nerys sent me such a sweet message when she heard.

Like many other members I will sorely miss Nerys, for her humour, her treasure chest of first hand expert knowledge of sailing barges and similar continental commercial sailing vessels, her anecdotes of life aboard sailing barges; especially the one about the time her captain was relieving himself off the stern of his barge - to the cheers of the passengers of a cruise ship coming up astern🙈, and our Chats via PMs and Email.
Not forgetting her reports of your exploits in the Mobile Command Post vehicle converted by your good self.
I was very happy to have helped Nerys with some research about the ships her father served on or that she had travelled on; e.g. the RN LST, HMS Arethusa, PS Waverley.

Like Peejay I could not 'Like' your post as I feel that that would be inappropriate for such sad news. But I thank you for informing us.
With my best wishes and moral support,
Doug

Very sad news about Nerys plus update on her final boat project

Hello Alice so sorry to hear your news. I never met Nerys but her friendly and kind advice will be missed by us all. A great spirit and always uplifting in her posts. She was kind enough to follow some of us and it was always a nice thing to get a 'like' from Nerys.
Looking back at the posts on this thread she has had friends literally from all over the world, not a bad achievement!

God rest her soul, and she will stay in our own memories for a long time to come.

My best regards to you and so sorry for the loss you have sustained.

Very sorry to hear the sad news Alice, my condolences,- must be a huge loss for you. Nerys was always encouraging to other modellers, especially with her love of sailing barges. I enjoyed her historical information on the history of those boats, and anecdotes from her younger years. I'm sure she will be missed on this site. I hope you will get through this hard time ok. I'm sure when you are ready, the members here will help you finish your tribute to Nerys.

Alice, many condolences are going to be coming your way from many of us who were instructed, guided, and yes maybe even rebuked by your mate. She helped me on many an occasion and she was a source of knowledge one could count on if you got stuck. She will be missed by those who knew her and from those like me, who only knew her on this website and her Facebook page.

My condolences,

Very sad news about Nerys plus update on her final boat project

To be absolutely clear this is Nerys’s wife Alice posting, I am Devastated to report that Nerys passed away after a short final illness on Monday 27th of March She was one day short of being 90 years and 2 months, so at least spent some time as a nonogenarian! As you can imagine even allowing for her age and generally poor health it has come as a dreadful shock and I just feel like I am wading through treacle trying to cope with the loss of such a wonderful kind loving life partner. I am just in absolute bits. Having been with her though most of her final illness and ultimately her death and then having to deal with a lot of practical stuff like funeral arrangements letting family in both France and America know as well as far flung ex Thames Barge mates etc. I am sorry to have not posted to this forum sooner.

The enclosed Pictures are progress on Nerys’s latest and last boat project to date. Mostly built by me to the best I could manage of How Nerys wanted it to be like and with lots of guidance and some finishing when she had a bit of energy. I really haven't a clue about much of the detail of the hobby apart from sorting out fairly basic RC running gear in her previous non kit builds. I do intend to finish her as best I can. Nerys had not yet settled on a name for her but I believe she should be finished in the style of something like a Clyde puffer, we were planning smoke generators etc.

As you can imagine it might take me a bit of a while to get back on with the rest of the build. But in the end completed she will be.

Sorry to have to bring such heavy-weight discussion to a Hobby Forum. Once again I just cannot begin to tell you all what a wonderful woman and human being she was and how very very much I will miss her.

From a very lost and bereft,

Alice
